Snowflake eel - free to good home

A few weeks ago I adopted a snowflake moray from another reefer who was taking down their tank. (You may have seen my other thread) Unfortunately the eel has stressed the other fish so much that I have lost a few fish and many of the remaining fish are suffering. It seems unlikely that a...

    Snowflake Eel Suitability

The remaining fish are showing signs of stress. @Kensington Reefer suggested that the eel's nocturnal prowlings are preventing the others from resting and this makes sense. I don't see any alternative but to rehome this eel. If anyone has a suitable tank and is interested I would be happy to...

    Snowflake Eel Suitability

Recently I adopted a snowflake moray eel from @FeliciaLynn and all seemed well. Unfortunately in the weeks since original introduction I have been losing fish. Initially my eldest clownfish who was already ancient but more recently a hogfish and a tomini tank. From what I have read before...

    bondolo's defunct tanks

Ah, too late then. I don't want to end up with two females in the same small space.

    bondolo's defunct tanks

The eel has explored the tank thoroughly. So far he has knocked over only one rock. I was prepared for the eel arrival and had Felicia pre-check my setup with an abundance of precaution. The lid is tightly sealed with a nice big weight on the only portion he could theoretically lift. I've also...

    bondolo's defunct tanks

My eldest fish, a 8+ year old female ocellaris clown, which I have had for the entire time I have had a tank suddenly disappeared on Friday. The skimmer was working overdrive and my fish room/office had a distinct sulphur dead fish smell. She lived a long time for a clown fish. Well past the...

    bondolo's defunct tanks

@FeliciaLynn's snowflake eel has taken up residence and seems to like the 92G corner and especially the deep rockwork. Thanks to @Kensington Reefer for the taking care of the eel and my tanks while I was travelling! Yes, I have persistent problem with diatoms since moving to the 92. It...

Looks great Jon! Good to see that you and your tank continue to prosper!

    bondolo's defunct tanks

I am actually pretty good about remembering to do manual dosing but it is as Mike says, it will be more stable with automatic dosing. I also suspect that keeping the mag levels up will help with the inorganic calcium deposition that plagues my pumps and media canisters.

    bondolo's defunct tanks

I need to set up a doser with magnesium and trace minerals. The magnesium level is constantly low since sump and tank upgrade. I suspect the culprint is the vast amount of coraline growing on all the new surfaces and rocks.

    Dosing hydrogen peroxide

I used to do peroxide dipping and application to frags to burn off macro algae. Very tedious and in the long term felt like a losing battle. I have been much happier with a Tomini tang and a Magnifica Foxface which will scour all algae away from any frag or rock in short order.

Need Input from all members for 2017

I would like to get to at least one meeting in 2017. :-) 2016 has been a bust for me and I will be missing the potluck for the second year in a row. :-(

Thank you for the condolences and offers! Totally not required. I was primarily recording what I lost before I forgot!

    bondolo's defunct tanks

Pump died on the skimmer, some coral and livestock (cleaner shrimp and snails) died as well despite repeated water changes. I ended up losing armour of god palys, one nice SPS, orange pavona, Caulastrea and the worst loss, an Australomusa I had never figured out how to frag. Nothing that can't...

What are you guys buying during black Friday

Yeah, that seemed just as outrageous as BRS including about a dozen $65 Cermedia plates in their BRS 160 tank build. I read a review of the Cermedia plates which said they performed about the same as 7X volume of base rock in a sump for nitrification though don't offer anything for pH...

What are you guys buying during black Friday

I bought a replacement Varios 4S DC pump for my Reef Octopus skimmer. I had not planned to, but the untimely death of the old one mandated that I do so. I did also restock my cleanup crew and also bought several Brightwell XPORT bio plates which Marine Depot had on for a great price. Oh, and two...

    NIST Traceable Thermometer

I have always used the ice water / boiling water method. You'll need a barometer to know what the boiling temperature should be. This method is generally accurate to within a 0.1ºC

My DC return pump failed ... and fish died ...

The replacement controller performed no better. Buying a replacement pump. :-( With all of the early black friday sales it is almost the same price to buy a replacement skimmer.

My DC return pump failed ... and fish died ...

Yes, I learned this in my research. I made sure the one I got was a DC model. Thanks again!
