    Any automatic feeder recommendations?

For the Eheim it has a sliding door to control the volume per feed. And it can very hard to get a small dose with flake food without needing to pre-crush the flakes (and they tended to stick to the walls) and you need a bunch of food to get sufficient volume for the device to work reliably...

    Orange fungus/mucus/spot/sponge/something on Elegance

I think it's a sponge too after reading/looking at more posts. Scraped it off in the dip. The Elegance seems to be happier now, more extended than before. Can't rule out some sort of bacterial/fungal infection but the sponge is the prime suspect.

    Any automatic feeder recommendations?

I second the Eheim for a budget option.

    Orange fungus/mucus/spot/sponge/something on Elegance

Noticed my Elegance coral had shrunken quite a bit lately. Took it out to do a dip and discovered an largish (about 1/2 in long, 1/4 in wide) orange patch on the side just below top edge of the skeleton. Hadn't seen it before because the coral expanded covered it. Poked at it and found that I...

    Cycling a new tank

It's better to leave the coral lights off for a while. Turn them on too early and it'll foster algae growth. The first time I cycled a tank (10 gallon nano) I turned the lights on after a month, hair algae/cyano/etc followed pretty soon afterwards. The second time (24 gallon) I waited at...

Pseudoscience and reefing: why so much bad information (semi rant)

The Dinos doing worse at higher nutrient levels isn't that weird an ecological concept. Cacti for example doing better in arid (i.e. low nutrient) conditions but get out competed by other plants under non-arid conditions. Organisms often have a preferred set of conditions (a niche). But to...

Inside the house or outside or both? While you're sleeping or at any time?

Bugs identification .. help ( not reef/fish related)

Hmm, I suggest buying some flea traps setting them up near where you're getting bit just to confirm you don't have fleas. And maybe some generic insect traps too. The pic doesn't quite look like a flea. Potentially a larva of some bug that bites?

Bugs identification .. help ( not reef/fish related)

Do you have pets? Generally fleas will come in on the animals (we always have to treat the cats in the summer time or else people get bit). With fleas, you can be sure if you have them by giving your cat/dog a soapy bath. That'll kill some of the fleas and you can see them floating in the...

    Coral Hobby Rookie

You can measure ammonia (and nitrite and nitrate) and see if gets "cycled", i.e. ammonia -> nitrite -> nitrate by bacteria. Depending on how you cycle a tank, you can either measure ammonia that you added directly to the tank or after adding fish food. It really kinda depends on what method...

    Is my SPS dying?

I recently moved my system (about a month ago). Didn't removed the sand but things got sloshed around quite a bit. This triggered a big dino + diatom + cyano + hair algae bloom. I'm guessing a lot of nutrients and micro-organisms were unleashed into the water column—it's as if the tank went...

I give up, need a new RO/DI unit, suggestions?

I have a 4 stage BRS RODI system (i.e. 1 carbon filter). I haven't added any Seachem Prime, for example, to remove any potential residual chloramine—would that show up in the TDS reading? Googling, looks like most people don't add a treatment like Prime to their RODI water but a few do.

I give up, need a new RO/DI unit, suggestions?

Do you recommend treating with water conditioner to remove any chloramines if you have a standard BRS 4-stage?
