    Dinoflagellates: Who has beat them?

I’ll be a counter case then. I never saw any pods in my tank. It’s possible they were there but they must have been hiding. I did remember in addition to the UV and phyto, I also got three 5 micron socks and stirred everything up each day for 3 days (one sock/day). After that it was fairly...

    Dinoflagellates: Who has beat them?

UV and phyto ended up being my cure.

    Non-Neptune moonlight simulator suggestions?

I agree that even on their lowest setting, the kessil is still way too bright to simulate moonlight. I have ap700’s though so some of the newer models may work better.

    Nem Trouble

Mine will deflate periodically but that’s pretty common and not what yours looks like. I would try feeding it some small pieces of shrimp. If it still is “sticky”, I’d keep feeding it every few days. If the food doesn’t stick, I’d be more worried. It doesn’t look unhealthy in the picture; just...

End of the Year Tank Shots?!

Look at all those Koosh balls.

How much do you let your tank temp swing?

This was a surprise to me since we try to keep our temps so consistent. Last time I was snorkeling in Kauai, there were noticeable fluctuations in the water temperature.

    Reuse from tank with dinos

I almost tagged you on this since I remember your long lasting battle with dinos.

    Refugium (adequate size)

Agreed, I never had a problem with nitrates but was constantly battling high po4 (0.3+). One tip, if you’re able, is to have the refugium before your skimmer section. I did this to maximize as much volume as I could for the fuge. If you have the skimmer first then your fuge is limited by the...

PSA: BOGO RODI filter sets at BRS

I wonder if you’ve just got a bad UPS driver or something. You see those ring videos where the guy is tossing packages onto the porch. I don’t know.

    120x36x36 build

Man, that’s horrible news. Is there anything that can be done or is it too late?

    Earthquake San Jose?

Oh man, you were pretty close to me then. I lived near Blossom Hill and Snell. No, but I did run outside and looked up to the sky while turning in circles like what you would see in a movie. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right?

    Earthquake San Jose?

I was 9 and remember I was watching tv and the show went out and I blamed my sister when everything started shaking.

    Jake Adams passed away

Our local Colorado reef club just had an event at his shop the Saturday before he left on his trip. There was only about 8 of us there so it was a super chill environment to hang out and talk about his different setups. I would have never guessed this would be the situation a week later.

Tank getting delivered Monday, what should I do?

I’ve had freight companies “rewrap” deliveries that they’ve….been rough with. It looks good from the outside but is clearly damaged once opened.

    Free Yellow Tang in Hawaii

We just got back from 2 weeks in Kauai. I was surprised to not see any yellow tangs. I saw plenty of other fish and much more coral than I had seen on other trips just no yellow or Achilles tangs. The coolest thing was to see an octopus.

What salt would you actually buy at High Tide?

Plus salt takes up a fair amount of room. The opportunity cost is not being able to have something else in inventory that does move faster and has a better margin. Robert, does TM give you the same price that they give places like BRS? Some of my vendors lower their prices for the larger...

    Black Hawaii Office Aquarium

Personally, I’d take the coral out and let the nem(s) take over.

    AL stand build structural questions

You can convert a distributed load to a point load but it doesn’t yield the same results for its effect on the beam. This is why you lay down on thin ice. Another illustration would be standing on the end of a diving board be laying down along it. The deflection of the diving board is increased...
