Diy Frag Plug Workshop (San Jose) Aug 9th @3pm

It was great having @MichaelB and @psidriven over! Since just the two of them showed (plus family), they both got a proper stack of slip-cast molds and materials. If they want to be plug-making-factories, they'll be ready to go. :D

Diy Frag Plug Workshop (San Jose) Aug 9th @3pm

I just pulled out the first little test batch of cast and stamped plugs. The little rough edges need to br trimmed/scraped off before firing, but that's typical. Maybe we can record and edit a little video showing the end-to-end process, given that it is quite simple. :)

Planning for a new full-size aquarium (Ultum R120 or R150?) and full automation

Okay!! That makes even more sense! When I looked at that one online I was thinking, “Wait did they intentionally make a waterfall where the water drops several inches??? Isn’t that going to be insanely loud?? There is so much great advice in here - thank you so much! I also like the...

Planning for a new full-size aquarium (Ultum R120 or R150?) and full automation

I saw a few people selling that 3d-printed adapter online, and it looks pretty straightforward. It does look like the return water-flow has a pretty big "waterfall" style flow... I'm curious, is that waterfall through the adapter louder than normal?

Planning for a new full-size aquarium (Ultum R120 or R150?) and full automation

I do love IM - we have the 15 gal AIO from them and it’s great. The real thing holding me back from the bigger IMs is their terrible sump system. They are super tricky to retrofit with a filter roller, and they seem to be very space inefficient within the stands. It’s frustrating because I love...

Planning for a new full-size aquarium (Ultum R120 or R150?) and full automation

(MichaelB) Oh that's amazing there is another person locally with one of their tanks! I'd love to hear his thoughts, and if there is anything I should consider when placing an order. And yeah, I am leeeeaning towards the 150, although my wife says, "Hmm isn't the 4' one big enough?". But...

Planning for a new full-size aquarium (Ultum R120 or R150?) and full automation

Hey all, We are finally ready to pull the trigger on setting up a new, bigger tank. We've spent the last year getting our little 15 gallon nano healthy, stable, and, learning more about the life of reef keeping. Now, with this upcoming transition, I'm looking for a bit of advice! For...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

So agrocrete looks to be a poured castable material - like concrete. That means you mix it, a reaction starts, and it gets hard. Similar to plaster. To make those you’d need to make a silicon mold (flexible, so they can be removed after hardening) and then mix up just enough of the material...

Perfect - that makes complete sense. Also, the good news about flat discs - outrageously easy to make. Roll out a slab of clay using a rolling pin (or a slab roller, in a ceramics studio) and go to town with a cookie cutter. Shazzam - a gazillion flat discs.

Cool video of diy frag plugs

So I just found a one plug in my cabinet with a stem, and measured the stem (~9mm diameter). Ideally, we'd want to identify early (here in this thread) the sizes of plugs we actually want. I can then pre-make a handful of molds for the different sizes. To keep things simple, it's probably...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Does anyone happen to have a set of calipers (or a ruler) and can check the diameter and length of the stem that comes out of the bottom of a frag plugs top plate? Once I get those, I'll go ahead and make the 3D models so I can print them, and then make a few plaster molds for casting these things.

Cool video of diy frag plugs

If someone wanted to give me the specs of the best frag-plug size, I can get a 3D model of the master-mold whipped up in just a few minutes. Flat discs would be outrageously easy to cast. Discs with a post are fairly easy, although marginally more complicated to slip-cast. Either way would...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Yes - a single plaster mold can be used to cast many many replicas. A couple hundred wouldn't be unusual before the mold degraded and lost its precision. If I were doing this, I'd make a single plaster mold that had spots for many 10 or 20 frag plugs, that way you'd get a gazillion of these...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

I do have the desire to host a little get-together for some of the active folks in the San Jose area at my house sometime this summer for pizza/beer/hanging-out... I could also work a little lesson on frag-plug casting into that, if any of those folks happened to be interested. Funny enough...

First-time Innovative Marine 15 gal cube

I haven't posted a tank journal update in here in a while, but we're doing great despite a few ups, downs, and lessons along the way (ex: don't point the return pump right at hammers - even after just a single day, it can kill off heads). But all in all, we are loving it. And after the last...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Michael: I have a couple kilns at the house (we have a pottery studio here in San Jose). I would be happy to fire any number of these that you cast. I also have probably 30 gallons of slip, and would be happy to give you enough slip to cast more plugs than you will ever have the...
