Current status of our former clownfish-anemone tank. It will be nice to be able to look back as the school year progresses to see where we started. In this tank I would like to look into increasing the little return pump to see if I can ditch the in-tank powerheads to increase safety for anemones.

Moving on to former frag tank which is now mainly a cleaner shrimp, crab, algae and foraminiferan habitat. Decided to skip sea hare, peroxide dip, etc., and just restart. Still deciding if it will be a certain biotope, shrimp and softies tank, specialized inverts, or bonzai reef. I love the...

Eeek. The 7-year-old sandbed in our big tank is always in the back of my mind... Thanks for the abalone suggestion.

Continuing the current state of tanks for the record, here are copepod and brine shrimp/phyto habitats that have been going since school closure in March 2020. Yep, they look bad and there is an abundance of mulm in the bottom of the tanks but it is pretty amazing how they have survived. A...

Quarantine tank is bursting at the seams after the swap at CaliKid and a visit from @Holly94583 (thank you!). As soon as the lowboy storm has passed, some corals will go there; others will be mounted in our big tank after an algae removal and water change next week.

Whelp, I have realized I have no idea how to run a barebottom tank - lowboy frag tank. Lightweight algae and detritus galore. Draining down and heavily supergluing the internal overflow box seems to have worked perfectly and I currently have floss clamped to the tank wall to mechanically filter...

    The 225 Gal Monster

I have never had my sump overflow, but have had mishaps with spills from the clean water hose flowing outside the sump during water changes, as well as a spill when refilling a dosing jug. I might be spill prone, but seems wise to protect the whole floor inside the stand.

    Green mantis shrimp

My plate is overflowing right now and while it was exciting to get down a tank to start prepping for a mantis shrimp, I think I feel relieved you will give it a good home!

    Green mantis shrimp

I could set up a 20g long tank with sand and a rocky hideout (and PVC?) for this guy but would need to cycle it and refresh myself on what his needs are. I thought he needed a big tank but maybe I'm mistaken. I once had a mantis shrimp in a glass tank and he never smashed it. I am not sure how...

What do you think this is?

The shrimp could be hiding out in your rock. I have sworn mine were gone, only to see them swaying upside down in rocky caves and coming out to take bits of fish when I fed the tank.

Harlequin Shrimp not interested in a choc chip starfish.

Where are you located? I’m in Pleasant Hill and could collect some asterinas for you.

9/18/22 (Sun) Open Regional Frag Swap at Cali Kid Corals in Concord

Great time today - thanks to the CaliKid crew for all you did and BAR organizers for the fun event! Got a bunch of cool corals for students to add to our classroom tanks. They are staying the night at my house, getting dipped before school, then kids currently manning the QT will add them. I...

    Salty_Taste650: Innovative Marine 14Gal Peninsula

That thing is wild - I looked it up and read that the polyps are a type of parasitic zoa. Hopefully some experienced spongekeepers here.

    Green mantis shrimp

Hmm. I had a live rock hitchhiker red mantis for awhile when I set up a tank. It was awesome and entertaining but I do not currently have a setup ready. Do you have it isolated? Does it come out or stay hidden unless being fed?

    Salty_Taste650: Innovative Marine 14Gal Peninsula

Never saw that beautiful sponge. Massive polyps - is it nonphotosynthetic? Why do you have to rehome it?

Last chance if you’d like to pick this up at the swap…

    Hello Everyone

Welcome! Look forward to meeting you at the swap.

What is this algae stuff growing in frag tank and what eats it?

It is light tan and very soft and tries to cover the bottom glass. Also shown here on tiles and a skeleton. Blows around easily when disturbed. Would an algae blenny eat this? Any other consumers?

    PIF: Current USA Light Mounts

Anybody going to the swap at CaliKid need these two NIB mounts for Current USA Orbit/Satellite lights? They stick out too far (15") for our narrow tank.

    PSA: heatwave and pge shutdown

In the same vein, is anyone experiencing brown-out conditions? At the outlets, our voltage is 100 during the heat of the day, then bumps back up in the night. We have not checked it anywhere else yet. Is this PG&E's doing or due to power line equipment and heat or our own wiring?
