    Best Heater?

Thanks Northbay... I have seen way to many people cook their systems and just don't want to risk it. On my fish system the natural gas setup seems to be running from what I can calculate at about equal to a 15,000 watt electric heater. That = cooked triggers pretty quick even in a 1100g system.

    Best Heater?

I may be the odd man out here but I do not trust any heater controllers, especially the built in ones or even the Apex or RK controllers. The built in heaters use such cheap components that its not worth the risk if you have a system of any size. For the Apex and RK controllers I just don't...

People who have built a fish room...

Mike, How many gallons is your system and how much are you spending a month on just heating it. I moved my large fish system over to natural gas last year and it cuts the heating bill by about 90%. Problem is you are going to need to spend $1000-$1500 to setup something. My ROI was only a few...

Aaargh! MY puirple tang in the display have ich.

Only thing that will "cure" ich is copper or hypo, everything else is a gimmick. Hypo is really really hard to make sure the salinity is low enough and to keep the QT tank stable. I have cured many fish I have purchased that came down with Ich in my QT system with Cupramine. I run Cupramine...

    UPS(s) ? Anyone use them?

Just saw this thread... Not been watching the forums much as the wife is due in March so most reef things are on hold as I have many other things to get ready. Anyways about my UPS setup. I have 3 APC UPSs that I have been using for years. I have two APC 2200 RM UPSs and a really large...

Matt thanks for the info. The one part of my plan I did not mention was once I got down to

    Lanthanum Chloride

I have had some bounce back also but I suspect that is phosphate leaching off the rock since my Po4 has been high for many years. After one of my doses the other day I got it down to 0.36 but then the next morning it was at 0.74. I have had the same bounce back problems on this tank with GFO...

    Lanthanum Chloride

From what I have read the large aquariums dose it slowly in front of their freshly flushed sand filters so the precipitate does not get into the display tanks. What I have done, with so side effect so far, is dilute 11ml of it in about 2 gallons of DI water and drip it slowly into my skimmer...

    Lanthanum Chloride

I have given up on the amount of GFO I needed to use for my FOWLR System. Its been at 3ppm of Po4 for a long long time now. GFO and Water Changes just don't make a dent and cost way to much money when you are dealing with this many gallons of water. After a bunch of research I decided to give...

Those of you who own an Acrylic tank...

I have not seen any new custom tanks of theirs in 8-12 months. At that point I would not recommend them to anyone and I have bought multiple large tanks from them over the years. So its good to hear that things are better now but I would still shop around and check out price, material used to...

Those of you who own an Acrylic tank...

Having been the owner of two larger acrylic tanks (220g for 8+ years and 600g for 5+ years) I have a few words of advise. If I were to do things over again I would really rethink about going acrylic for the 220g system. My original 220g tank top cracked a few years ago and Tru-vu had to build...

    Rygh's 250 gallon upgrade

Rygh sounds like you are moving along pretty fast. You will enjoy the inwall. My 220 SPS is inwall just like that. Only different I did is I build the cabinets to the top of the TV nook and put big doors up there so I could hang MH's. I also punched through the back of the wall behind the...

How about I tempt some more people to come tomorrow on the tour :) This is and many other yummy things will be at the potluck tomorrow night. 9 lbs of tasty pulled pork went in the smoker an hour ago. It will be ready in 19 more hours. Smoking it with a mix of Cherry and Hickory...

    Bulbs for loan?

Bryan, Thanks for letting me borrow the bulbs. I have run them for a few days now and am torn between them and the Reeflux 12Ks. I love the punch of the radiums and the colors it brings out but there is just something about the Radiums I like also. Anyone know of a good 400w bulb that is...

Taking a Jigsaw to an Acrylic Tank

+1 on the router. I would glue the new braces on to the size you want the new openings and then use a flush trim router bit to cut it. A saw of any sort is just going to make a mess. All the tops on acrylic tanks are cut with routers when they are made by the manufacture. That's how they get...

    RO/DI Upgrade

Well Success!!! I got the new RO/DI mount in my filter shed tonight and hooked up. It was a really tight fit as it just barely fit between the ceiling and the gauges on my Natural Gas heater for my FOWLR system. I only have one PSI gauge right now so I put it in line between the first and...

    RO/DI Upgrade

Mike, Totally agree on the bottled water thing. Most of the bay area is so lucky with the water quality we have at our tap. I was born and raised in San Ramon so I know nothing besides EBMUB and not sure how I could not live in one of their service areas. I think Coke's bottled water is...

    RO/DI Upgrade

Mike, My bill varies all over the place depending on what time of the year it is. Its only like $35 a month during the winter months while during the summer it peaks out at like $125 a month during July/August. For the year I am averaging $80 a month. Just like PG&E, EBMUD charges more...
