The Red Sea ATO had an auto shut off built in. If the water runs enough to fill the sump by an inch it will shut off. Or you could run a secondary water level sensor.

IMO. Low tech planted tank is pretty easy. When you get into co2 and high tech it becomes a bit more challenging. When they are mature and are growing they are more work than a reef tank. Also the black beard algae is almost impossible to get rid of if you get it
