Not sure what the dilemna or trick question is supposed to be here but the math answer to 48/2(9+3)=288. Next?

I thought it was that simple at first as well, and was wondering about the fuss.

But one of sid700's posts triggered and old memory, and as written, depending on
the exact convention you expect, yes, it can be 2.
There is a special convention where the "multiplication by juxtaposition" takes priority.
As an engineer, I consider that convention to be from a bunch of goofy math types in the 60's, and completely illogical.
:)
Nonetheless, both conventions exist, so there is no "truly correct" answer.
