As of yesterday I've tore down my Reefer 500. Plan of record was clear it completely out and switch it to a planted freshwater. Main reasoning:
However, I'm now realizing how big a PITA it'll be to convert this to be freshwater. I really just don't want to deal with the deep cleaning and getting rid of all the vermetids in overflows and ... If I just run freshwater through it and do a big water change after a week maybe I don't need to be that thorough but it's going to be another weekend.
Also Edgar has so many nice fish, and when I stopped by Aquatic Collection I saw so many other nice fish. It got me debating if I should give FOWLR a try. I've never actually done that. My tank back in 2000s was coral, and my recent were also.
This all brings me to my main question. Does anyone have good examples of FOWLR style tanks that look great? Not ones that look like a pile of rocks with fish in them, but ones that are interesting and compelling. Something I can run cool color lights over during the evening / day.
I'd also be open to spotlighting a couple coral if it'd work, like a GSP mound. Some atomic broccoli would be cool to, but anything I keep would probably eat it.
If I did this I'd want a trigger, maybe a chromis school, probably a clown. I'd also take the low effort approach this time. Meaning I would be able to treat diseases in tank, so I probably wouldn't be OCD about QT.

- I don't have the time to take care of this display, and it led to coral die offs and due to a feeder failure some fish die offs
- My wife hates the blue lights, and it's in our living room so I understand
- I always have loved freshwater planted tanks and am interested in doing a big one
- It's stressful to worry about the fish and coral, particularly if we travel
- It's burning through so much electric I feel bad
- My freshwater tanks are soooo much easier
