I'd assume it is underwater temps.
 
I think the problem is also acclimation to temp. We have no idea what happens to the corals in transit, and lower temps in the tank means lower bacterial growth and faster biological activity in general. Going from the stress of shipping to a high temp and high light may give a double whammy to the corals. My tank drops to 76 at night and depending on the weather get up to 78 or 80 during the day. Once summer hits, I will make efforts to stabilize it more.



Also, the temps where we were collecting in Tonga last week was round 84, in September 78, in June 70. I assume that Jims figure 9 shows something similar.
