Anyone here good with Netgear router?

I'm about to hit it with a hammer and set it on fire. For some reasons the last month or so, it keeps dropping connection. If there in only one PC connect to it then it works ok. More than one, it will drop all connections like every 10 minutes. I reset and reconfigured it and it's still doing that. Has you seen this problem before?? Oh I have a WGR614 v5 model. I upgraded the firmware to the latest one already.

Any good wireless router that you can recommended? I'm think about getting a D-Link DGL-4300. It has pretty good review on newegg. I don't want to spend more than $100 for the router though.

You should be able to pick up a Belkin or Dlink for <$100 easily. Unfortuneately, I'm having a problem sort of like yours. Not sure which model, but every now and then there's a really long period where the laptop won't be connected to the router. Usually a plug out/plug-in fixes it for the time being. But it doesn't bother me much as I use a desktop that's hardwired. No problems there.

It's not just the wireless connection that I'm having problem with. The two PCs are having the same problem and they are hardwired.

You could be having line noise which would make it not the router but the modem. This is the problem I am having currently :(

I am currently using a Netgear WGT624 and it has been pretty trouble free for me. I did purchase a DLINK DIR 655 for my place in SF and I really like it a lot. You can often times find it for just under $100. I would highly recommend that one.

If that is a problem, wouldn't you lose connection to the internet and not the router??

Half the time it seems to crash my Netgear router, I can't explain it and tech support just made me angry with their stupidity :(

Yes, the thing is plugged in, I told you that three times, quit loosing your place in your CS manual :D

LOL... I hate those stupid Helpless... I have comcast and the modem died on me. They made me reboot the PC 5 times before saying that is a bad modem. I just sat there and told them that the pc has been rebooted. I have a super computer. It only take 20 seconds to shutdown and come up ;D ..

Phong, I've seen that kind of problem originally a few years back after one of the XP service packs.

I tracked it down to something related to encryption/authentication method used. Don't remember all the details now, but if I used a weaker/older encryption or ran an open network, then the connection wouldn't drop. Didn't matter if I used DHCP or static IP's or static DHCP etc either.

If I used the wpa-psk with tkip then I would lose connections. I think it was related to the temporal key.

Same setup was completely fine before the service pack.

Also, this affected only a Fujitsu running a d-link wireless card. A Sony with same configuration and an internal wireless didn't drop connections.

You could play around with your network configuration to see if the encryption method makes a difference.

Hmmm... could be too much traffic on your network for your router. Got any neighbors stealing bandwidth? Downloading too many um... large video files?

Is your network secured or does it pass out IP's to anybody?

Log on to your routers admin console and see what computers have been connected.

Also hmm... if your wireless card is configured for long preamble, you might switch to short, in case there's too many packets flying around.

It's secured and nobody tries to connect to it. I'm having a hard time connect to it in the same house and the nearest house is like 70' from the router :D .. The preamble is set to long and short. The other option is long. There is no short :( .. Two laptop is all it takes to have a connections issue. I used to have 7 systems connect to it (2 PCs and 5 laptops - wireless) and didn't have any problem. I think the router is on its last leg ::) ..

We used to give out Netgears at work for remote access and found they only live 1-2 years. But Netgear was happy to RMA them! ;)
