Our mission

anyone here owns a civic hybrid?

Thanks - basically I want to know if you guys like them...do they qualify to drive in the carpool lane?

AFAIK they do qualify for carpool, however all the carpool stickers they give to hybrids are gone, and am unsure if they will issue more next year or if it's a one time thing.

I have residents that have the hybrid and they love this car.

Honda Accords and Civics have a high propensity for getting broken into if you park out on the street in SF so be careful. Our garages get hit like gangbusters these days as darkness descends that much quicker. Cars don't get stolen, they just get broken into.

For some reason Toyota Corolla's and Camry's do not get hit unless the vandels/thieves are just smashing the windows just for fun.

Drove that one I spoke about for a weekend. Nice car, could use more torque, but hey, gets great mileage (still got 37 MPG out of it trying to hit 80 most of the time, haha). Ride was smooth and uber quiet.

are you guys driving the older ones or the new ones? I heard rumor that the new ones are MUCH better in terms of gas mileage and reaching their claimed mileage numbers?

hey are breaking into the hybrids too? I know civics are big break ins, but didn't know if the hybrids are on the hotlist too. I am looking at the new 2008 one :)

Sometimes the # of break-ins doesn't exactly correlate to the car type... just that they're more common than others. Just a thought. I wouldn't stay away from a car type like a civic hybrid, merely because there were a few broken into.

I talked to a tow truck guy once, he said the cars that break down the most are civics. Then I read an article about how many more civics there are compared to other cars that he said he had towed. Then looking closer, the reasons civics break down and the outcome are much milder than some of the bad break downs. Most civic break downs reported were because of dead batteries. The civics needed such little maintenance, a lot of people just refused to put any maintenance other than oil changes since the car was known to be so "hardy".

So perhaps hybrids are a trend now to steal or break into, and the ones Eileen knows of were from some one who knows how to break into hybrids well. I think any car you consider would be in as much risk... within reason of course.

Don't skip out just because there are some stats that show it has been a few robberies from, is my opinion.

There is no excuse when you have a gps system mount on your car window (doh) on any car. So hiding your stuff, locking them up, would be smart for any car.

Some things to lookout for are easy to steal cars, like soft top convertibles and older cars without the window guard. (put a doorstop between the side rolling windows and the plastic, and you can toggle the lock line).

btw, I remember reading stats that the Acura Integra Type-R was the most commonly stolen vehicle percentage wise. Something like 80% of all type-r's have been stolen once in their lifetime. Of course this overall number is dwarved by the overall number of civics stolen. This mainly because the resale on every part in the type-r is ridiculously high.

So... if the hybrid has parts that can sell for a lot, maybe it is targeted more =X But if it's just valuables you store inside, maybe it's YOU that's targeted? ...with all those fancy things you guys buy ;)

Even regular 'tegs have really high theft rates. It's due to the fact that Acura parts will basically bolt onto Hondas.

Acura's get hit up the wazoo too.

Most of the European cars with the exception of Mercedes who used to be European don't get hit. Some of the higher end and it's few of the Lexus and Infiniti's will get hit but not that often.

They just whacked out a Jeep's (they seem to like those) window and took a golf club turned around and whacked a car next to it. They tore up that up that car.

Mind you if you leave the car unattended anywhere anything may happen. SF seems to have more break ins that I hear about than any other city. There was a ring car thieves a few years back where they had master keys that were stolen from the dealer - they whacked Fords, Honda Accords & Civics were their favorite.

Another thing to realize with hybrids is that you really do need to change your driving style to get the full effect. Now this is not to say you must drive like a grandma, but you need to drive like you SHOULD drive with ANY car to achieve the maximum mileage out of every gallon of gas. With hybrid cars its just the same except obviously they got cars to save gas, I've seen way too many times people bitching about not getting the mileage that's advertised when they're still doing 85+ down freeways and wondering why the mileage isn't anywhere close.
