Could you just make some cuts in the end of a 1/2 tube with scissors to rough up the end. Then use that to scrape and siphon

Edit: or this iteration of my previous design

The key, for me, is to avoid the hand movements that wreak havoc in the tank.

More snails? Or am I remembering that you have a snail munching tusk

I do. I have some snails but not many. I have tried urchins and sea hares and they’ve not made a difference. The last sea hare I tried died a week later - not idea why.

I’ve done the toothbrush rubber-banded to a regular 1/5” diameter siphon hose down to a filter sock in my sump for this. Works great, very simple, doesn’t waste water but has a continuous suction going. Won’t prevent scaring the fish though. But I don’t think any of the above options would.

If cutting and removing the tops would help let your CUC take back control. Then you could use stainless steel wick cutters rubber banded to a siphon.

the wick trimmer lets you keep your hands away from the rock and just holding the tube
