Will these grow outwards without having structure to grow on?

I’ve seen them grow straight out, droop down, or even go up
I imagine it changes based on conditions and the type of “chalice” since that covers kind of a large group of corals.

The hollywood stunner grows out nicely imo, the chalices that I have are called rainbow chalices so was wondering on that.

This was one I got at the September swap last year vs. June this year. It created a big chalice shape whereas the pink boobies chalice next to it encrusts down into the sand and incorporates it into its skeleton:

Chalices are a pretty broad group of genera:p

Many different corals with many growth forms. For chalices you would figure out the genus your piece is first

I just go through the species and compare to online images if the coral isn’t named
