Our mission

Cleaning Filter Sock

I use a filter sock on the drain from my main tank into my sump. I have a couple different ones so I can switch them out. I was curoius as to the best way to clean them between uses? I am kinda nervous about putting them in the washing machine because of soap residue in the machine.

You can run a hot water rinse first to get rid of soap residue (I never do)

I wash the filter socks with a cup of bleach, rinse twice, and then let it air dry for 24hr minimum.

New filter socks will need to be washed prior to use (same method) to remove the foaming that it always seems to have in our tanks when you put them to use the very first time

i hand wash mine, but the filtersock i use is a 300 micron windbreaker nylon type...i used cloth ones before and they kept clogging up on me..even after throwing them into the washing machine..

i would throw the old ones into the washing machine w/ a little bleach...then throw them into a bucket of ro water with some dechlorinator, then air dry them for about a day or so

How does everyone feel about mechanical filters? I always avoided using them because I'm too lazy to clean it and nutrients just collect on them. With my tank now I'm starting to see stuff floating so I may start to clear up my water.

I used to use filter socks, then I figure it wasn't really worth the effort, I can easily siphon the crud out with a water change anyways. When I did however I simply turned it inside out and sprayed it with the "Jet" setting from my hoses sprayer outside.

I soak them in super hot bleach water overnight, then throw them in the washer with more bleach, double rinse, hang dry and they're good. I'm probably one of the few club members that does a full load of filter socks regularly :D

I change mine out about every 3-4 days. Once I have a bucket full I throw them in the washing machine. First I run an empty cycle to get rid of whatever soap is left in the washer, then wash the socks with bleach and an extra rinse cycle. Let dry for 24 hours and ready to go again :)

Jeremy, so are you confident that the bleach 100% discipate? Or do you give them a soaking in prime? I've tried bleach plastic tubing one (don't ask), but the fact I could constantly smell the bleach on it regardless of how much I rinsed it I didn't use it in my tank.

[/quote]Filters socks are a walk in the park, try on site bleaching of ornamental corals when you're trying to get in and out in 40 minutes. Soak them in Prime and they still reek of bleach, I still have never had a problem. When I was working for Modern Aquariums, Jay (my boss) showed me how to do it with Genisis, and sent me on my way, I was sooooo scared the first time I did it. So far no problems and I've done it hundreds of times.

AFA socks I let them dry out and their fine, if I have to put them in still wet 'cause I'm lazy like that I'll toss in a little Prime, for peace of mind more than anything.
