Coral IDs for the upcoming swap

#1 is not a vivid confetti, but a common imposter. True vivid confetti has yellow polyps:

Don't listen to the jaded old farts...there's nothing wrong with wanting to know the names of your corals. Yes they get a little silly, but a lot of people DO care about specific corals, especially when specific corals have quite a bit of value attached to them. There are also some interesting lineaged corals that have history (e.g. Jake Adams stuff), and that is also pretty neat.

And besides, how else are you supposed to communicate what a coral is?

"Does anyone want this acropora formosa with blue flesh, red polyps, and pale green growth tips?"

Come on...:p

I for one actually wish the hobby put more emphasis on identifying the genus AND species rather than a maui wowie ding dang holy grail splice name :)

My pet peeve is when people try to attach a lineage name to something they didn't even buy as named and just look for something close enough. Been burned buying named corals more times than i'd like with fakes.

Agree, but even if we adopt genus+species (which I like - i'd really like to know the specifies of some of the more common acros) you'd still need a naming convention given the huge variety of color morphs for a given species.

I just don't think there's a way of getting around having "names" for corals.

Agree this sucks, but doing away with names or avoiding names doesn't solve this problem! It's one reason (among many) that I don't sell coral. I just don't care enough to get into the drama that could ensue. I have a handful of coral with 100% certainty on lineage and then a whole bunch that are simply based on trust in the person I got it from. At the end of the day, nobody REALLY knows...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against trade names. It's just when trade names get forced on eeeeeeverything is what makes me roll eyes.

Speaking of fakes, anyone want to guess this one is? Bought a tiny frag as an amazeballs. Grew out to a colony and is not an amazeballs. But it's ok, I still like it. I plan to frag it in the near future and will not be claiming it as an amazeballs.

It could be still, my vivid does not really have yellow polyps in my tank but it does in other tanks. However if we do not know what it is we should not guess.

The scientific genus/species names change/split/merge too. Sometimes more often than the common/trade name. And one species will have several different morphs that each “deserve” their own trade name. And each specific trade-named coral will change appearance dramatically in the ocean vs tank 1 vs tank 2, etc. Lineaged corals aren’t any less subjective and subject to change, they are just someone who sells corals giving a name and charging more because now it’s lineaged. It’s only the collectors who are willing to pay a lot more for a lineage that drive the need for the lineage. All of which is fine, but worth keeping in mind there is no ground truth here.

Still, naming is useful. It’s the only way to know what we are talking about when we are talking or deciding which coral to pick on the swap tables or at a store. But it’s a bit messy.

Oh I'll have to double check mine. For some reason my camera isn't picking up the yellow and turning things green compared to what I see with my own eyes. I'll have to double check to see the colors of the polyp but if its not a true vivid confetti I'll update my post for the frag swap sheet. I still like the looks of the coral .. But the yellow does look nice! I'll update my photo for photo #2. It looks much yellower in person and I'm really curious what this one is.

Was looking at some old messages on reef2reef.. I think #6 is TGC starry nights. Can someone confirm? There are so many different pictures online. According to my old message history from the frag pack I bought from Yazannreef on reef2reef (he's located in discovery bay), I bought the following.. To be honest when I went over to buy stuff I was just picking stuff I liked. But since the frag swap requires I name these things, I should figure out what is what.

TGC starry nights
TSA fruity pebble
BigR walt disney
TGC crazy eyes
Daedalus Aquaman
Route66 Marlin Staff
The frag swap does not require anyone name anything. A description like Yellow tip acro
Or pale blue acro is just fine. And is better than a guess if you don’t know or the coral doesn’t have a name already.

my guesses thats more than "sps":
#1 & #6 - tsa the fuzz / tgc starry night / tsa grape ape
#3 - rr carebear / uc dipping dots / maybe under par rainbow loom
#7 - red planet / tsa rainbow sherbet / tsa fruity pebbles

hope i didn't offend you or get off on the wrong foot. I encountered some issues when naming some stuff in the past and that person ended up using that name to get a higher value out of it. in return, that person told the buyers it was from me even though i never sold it to him. in the end, i stopped selling publicly and only sell by word of mouth. so yea, i am a jaded old fart.

Heck yes I am trying to get into the ultra / bonus rounds and I want to make sure what I'm bringing qualifies. Unfortunately when I buy corals I dont track names of anything. I just buy what looks nice to me after seeing the main colony (for growth pattern and color).. But more importantly I need to know anything I put in my tank is slow growing. I just don't have room or time for fast growing corals.

so speaking of bonus rounds, how does that work? I noticed everything I have is already in the bonus round. Do I have to bring something thats different then whats on the sheet?

ok a few more frags for id. These are too small to frag. right now. I have an idea on first one (it was a super super slow grower. what you see was 1 year of growth at the top of the tank.)
