Ok, I know this might sound silly but I have a 16x24x72 120g that has seen better days. It's really thick glass and I'd hate to just junk it......







What do you think about cutting it into a new tank? Even if I manage to find a glass place to cut the glass, how easy would it be to cut the brace off and seperate the panels from the silicone? I know, "Stop being cheap and just go buy a tank". :) Has anyone done it?
 
I'm talking taking a huge 6ft long tank and seperating the 1/2 inch thick pieces. Everytime I say that is sounds crazier.... :)
 
Yeah, I cut mine on a little $100 wet saw from home depot. With a big tank, it would be rather difficult to keep it from getting out of alignment and binding. Also, it left pretty ragged edges. In my case that was fine since I put the top plastic pieces back on, but I wouldn't want edges like that on a corner.

Have you considered just selling the old tank and buying a new (or used) one?

What size do you want it to be?
 
It's a standard AG 6ft 120. Not sure if it's tempered or not. I got it for free and was planning on selling it to help raise $$ for my kids Honduras trip but it was in too bad shape to sell. The bracings have been cut down in 2 stops (most likely for overflow boxes) and painted black (originally were oak) plus most of the silicone has been cut out and some of it was replaced but it looks terrible. The glass itself looks fine and like I said it's super thick. The largest I could go is 48" but I was thinking of making a 24x24x36 or somewhere around there.

The sort of it..... I could try and wash it up but even lifting it takes 2 people, I'd have to repaint over the bracing and resilicone the instide to make it worth selling or using myself which I can't because it's too big. I suppose I could see if someone wanted it in trade??? but what's the chance of that....

Can I recycle it?
 
When you say too bad shape to see, are you talking about the glass? If so, how would it look better if you can make it in smaller tank? If the glass too thick, there is no way you can cut it by yourself. Anything thicker than 1/2" will need laser cut. I say put it back together and make a sump out of it.
 
I second Phong's idea. 1/2" glass is not easy to work with. You are better just making it a sump.

That said, what is wrong with the tank?
