Neptune Aquatics

December 10th BAR meeting featuring Rich Ross - Room 2338

I know, I know, what is this obsession with having the darling of our club come and speak in December? He told me it was the food, so we have to do it.

The talk will encompass his and Matt Wandell's trip to the Philippines to collect coral for the Steinhart Aquarium. Do we know any specifics? No, it hasn't happened yet, we'll be the first (or second) to know. For those of you interested in public aquariums, coral collection, regulations, propagation, culture, travel, humor and a myriad of other aspects of such a huge endeavor, this is a great talk. If those subjects don't excite you, you still need to attend because Rich rules!!!

Well, booked more than 2 weeks in advance, this better be good!

There is a huge expedition going from CAS for 6-8 week or more covering shallow and deep seas, and some land stuff. Mostly research staff and the biggest expedition the Academy has done in 40 years or so. We are only going for 16 days, March 10-16, and are honored by being part of it. We are collecting coral and a bunch of cephs, possibly doing surveys of coral and fish, as well as doing research on the dive sites - each window of the big tank at work is modeled on particular sites and it will be good to see them.

This will be our base of operations

Yep - there are other biologists at work that don't get to go too, so you are in good company.

Matt and I are giving a version of this talk in July in Charlotte. I'll see if he wants to come to the BAR version too.

Is that supposed to be the 26?

Shoot since you leave on the 10th there is no way you'll be seeing Tony or Si :(

So what if say someone happened to be where you guys were and happened to be diving in the same place... just a weird coincidence :D

My guess is that they probably have those bang sticks for that. :D

I don't think you'd want to be fragged, bagged, tagged ans sent back to CAS to live in the big tank. Although, they do have an incredible team taking care of it so living there may not be all that harsh. Do you like seafood?

Rich will be speaking at the December meeting for sure. Don't miss an informative and witty presentation by the founder of our wonderful club!!!

Need I say more? How about this!

Steinhart and Science in the Philippines

Researchers from the California Academy of Sciences have been visiting an area called the Verde Island Passage off the coast of Batangas Province on Luzon Island, Philippines for almost 20 years because it is the “center of the center” of marine biodiversity; there can be more species of soft corals at just one dive site in this area than in all of the Caribbean. Thus it was only natural that when the Steinhart’s 212,000 gallon reef tank was designed, the Academy decided to represent the reefs of Luzon. The 2011 Philippine Biodiversity Expedition, however, was a trip of a completely different magnitude: the largest expedition in the Academy’s history covering both land and sea. Consisting of a Shallow Water team, Deep Water team and a Terrestrial/Fresh Water team, the 2011 Philippine Biodiversity expedition, funded by by a generous gift from Margaret and Will Hearst, was the most comprehensive scientific survey effort ever conducted in the Philippines. Via video and photos, this talk will cover the expedition in general, Steinhart Aquariums role in the expedition - including the collection and shipping of corals and other hard to keep, hard to maintain animals.

"The" founder? I thought several people helped start BARE and several helped with BAR as well?
