Does anyone here have a sump, and not use filter socks? I am considering not using them anymore, as changing it 2-3x a week is becoming a little cumbersome. I notice crap does get stuck in the sock while in use, but I also notice a yellow to brown colored tint/stain to the sock (comes off after a nice bleaching). I guess this could be particulate matter, but not all of it can be. I am thinking the yellow/brown stain is the surface slick that is constantly sucked down the overflow box. I figure instead of letting my sock catch the slick and hold onto it, I could just remove the sock, and let my skimmer skim out the nasties. But having no filter sock may cause from minor bubble problems.
I don't mind siphoning a little garbage off the bottom of my sump once every couple weeks. My tank is pretty clean as I have a light fish load, I don't feed often, and I am running bare bottom. Between those things, and weekly water changes of 10%, things stay pretty spiffy.
SO -I was curious if anyone here doesn't use filter socks?
