Does anyone here not use filter socks?

500 microns (0.5 mm) is quite large in terms of pore size. For reference, a 24 gauge wire (used commonly in network cables) is 0.5mm. You can probably easily make your own. Heck, wonder how well panty hose would work!

I've never seen anything coarser than 200 microns, good luck on that one.

On a side note, I just started a tank move today that that has a sump with a skimmer and no baffles or socks, just a 40 gallon long glass aquarium, I've never had micro bubbles in that tank in 3 years. Not to mention several other tanks that I've run like that, you may not have any problems..

Hopefully not ... my sump only has ~ 8g of water in it

As of today, my tank is running without a filter sock!

filterbag.com they have it all. they even go up to 800 microns and do anysize you want. pretty decent prices. All depends on material you go with. check it out.
