got ethical husbandry?

Does anyone here still use bioballs for their reef aquarium?

So I just watched Dr Tim's talk at Macna about bacteria and nitrification (
) and what caught my interest is when he said he much preferred the old school bio balls over the marine pure blocks. Reason being that the blocks though very porous actually actually stop allowing water to flow through them once they get dirty and clogged up. Any thoughts on this? Anyone have used both bio balls and marine pure and noticed any difference?

I have a large marine pure block.
If anything, I worry water flows through too easily.
It gets a layer of crud on top, but sides generally stay clean.
Better than when I had a bin full of live rock rubble.
Easily washed also.

With media in general, I have problems with too much detritus clogging it. I've almost concluded that I can't run media without filter socks.

If looking for bacteria addition based systems, Am a fan of zeovit. Switched 4 years ago and never looked back. I feel it's the best way to maintain low nutrients and keep a healthy bacterial population long term.
