Hey Bar, I just had my Tunze 9004 skimmer die and am looking to replace it. They are $200 new, so I am open to others. I have anohter one on my 45 gallon cube and don't hate them, except when I need to figure out how to put them back together after a cleaning.

BRS and some people on youtube like the Bubble Magus MiniQ, and reef octopus makes a NS-80 I am curious to try for $100 given how much I like the rest of their gear.

@NanoCrazed I know you have valid opinions here, and want to hear them. What does the rest of BAR say?

If u were closer I have a tunz 9004 not in use.

Yes I have taken it apart and yes it’s a pain. I got the pump replaced under warranty. You know the dc version is rated much higher than the ac. If you are short of real estate and cannot get larger skimmer, this is the best you can get.

I’ve ran a few mini Q nanos and wouldn’t consider anything else for the 40$ price tag. Idk how well it would work on a 45 as it’s not super big but it’s certainly reliable for my 10/20s and I think they make a bigger one?

Generally I love all bubble magus stuff and have never been disappointed.

I thought nano skimmers are pointless?
They do the same as in a big tank, gives your water gas mixing and helps pull waste out. I run one on both by 30 and 45 tanks and am happy with them. My skimmer has helped a lot before when I accidently overdosed vodka in my little tanks and my fish needed to breathe. I would say it is less worth while on my mom's 13, so 20 gallons and above I'd consider them useful.

I just saw the miniq is only good for glass/acrylic up to 1/2" thick and mine is 3/4" acrylic. I was looking to try that, maybe I get one and stick it on my 45. But that and the fact that it is only really rated to 20 gallons and the Tunze is 30 w/ heavy bioload I am leaning towards forking out for the DC Tunze. I have 5 pink striped skunk clownfish, a pair of storms, and an aiptasia eating filefish, so there is some good bioload in there.

Didn't want to hijack your thread since it seemed you were looking for non-9004 options, but since we're here...I have the 9004 DC too. I really like it, except I could never get it to stop spitting out micro bubbles. I've had mine about 2.5 years running basically full throttle 24/7. Never cleaned it. I pulled it apart before installing it and it was tricky to get back together. Mine is installed in an area that makes it hard to remove, so I haven't. It doesn't really make sense that it would pull anything out of a 7.5g nano, but I get dark tea and scrub out the gunk almost twice a week. It's definitely doing something. It's really finicky about where the water line is and I've had to inject water in the airline a few times to get rid of the salt buildup, but you probably already know all that. How much better it is than other skimmers or no skimmer, IDK.
