The green ones? You mean the ones that Oscars couldn't break? Yes, they were awesome, but that is old ore, they don't make heaters like that anymore. The old Jager's were the standard of the industry, like Euro-Reefs are now.

(I do still use a Euro-Reef on my own tank ;) )

No the brown/tan ones :) (before green)

That predates me..

Me as well... but I got one from a used tank purchase eons ago :)

Ah, figured as much. When you break things down like that I didn't realize that natural gas was really THAT much cheaper, but I guess when you scale things up (300%+ usage Tier and all :D), it really does add up to significant savings.

I am curious though, do you have any off the top of your head calculations for how much power is required to keep the temperature constant? I'd guess depending upon how efficient your setup is (closed top, thick insulated walls, etc) it might not cost as much to keep your tank warm... In fact I seem to recall reading somewhere that it might be more efficient to keep the room at a particular temperature rather than using the tank to keep itself warm, similar to the way stores do it, especially since your tank does get towards store volume doesn't it? ... ok maybe you don't have THAT much... maybe a small store's volume:D

Hi Brian,

Not sure if this helps: Petco.com has a sale on the Stealth Heaters, and you or anyone can use this free shipping promo code sent to me via their e mail "Tell your friends to enter your unique Code PETCO10736576A at Checkout." em> (for orders over $25) if you decide to order one / some from them. I just ordered some things, but did not need to use the promo code that I'm speaking about because my order was large enough to qualify for the free shipping anyway. I've order from them a few times before. They send every via Fed Ex and it always arrives in 1 to 2 working days tops. FWIW. Here's the link to their sale....

I'm sorry I didn't get the opportunity to speak with you at the lecture and to introduce you to my wife Susan while she was there. I'm looking forward to catching up with you in the future.

My problem with keeping my FOWLR system warm is that the system is split between my dining room and a shed outside which is the filter room.

In my dining room I have the 600g tank. From there it has 2 x 2" drains that run out the side of the house, then underground about 12' and then up through the 6" concrete slab and pour into a 300g rubbermaid stock tank which is my sump. From there I have a 2" return pipe that runs back underground also to the tank. The shed itself is a 12x14' shed build just like a house with 2x4s, insulation and sheetrock. It stays fairly warm in there year round.

Even though PVC is a fairly decent insulator I suspect most of my heat loss is the underground plumbing runs. This is great during the summer as I only need to put a small fan on the fuge 2-3 days of the year, otherwise it stays a constant 79 degrees. The problem during the winter is it takes a lot of electricity to keep it warm. If I were to do this again I would insulate the plumbing all the way to the shed. I may still dig up and insulate it as far as I can until it goes under the shed slab which is about 8-10' of it.

Thats what I am thinking of doing. Its just the amount of time it would take me to do it. Work is such a zoo right now I barely have time to feed my fish :(

Indicator lights are good and bad. Every time one clicks on some fish freak out, especially triggers.
