Welcome to BAR! Glad to have you here with us. I've been running a 40gal breeder style frag qt tank with a HOB filter. It does the job and corals are doing good. Get yourself a wavemaker in there for more flow. It will help a lot with getting more debris into your filter.

Welcome! I started with my own tank in college too. Used to get RODI water from the lab. Worked at a store part time to get cheaper livestock. The coral farmers markets didn't help the old budget though. Didn't know about BAR then unfortunately.

Did a lot of vodka and La Vic orange sauce dosing, but not to the tank

A 30-gallon setup can be awesome even without a sump-HOB skimmers and filters can do a solid job if you stay on top of maintenance.
