Holy doodoo! Sand sifting starfish

I have a 215 gallon reef tank with dsb.
I have a sand sifting starfish and have since found out that they might not benefit the tank.
How bad is this thing. Should I take him back to the LFS?

I don't know but I guess it's hard to compete with an earthquake!

How about it folks. I heard a rumor that sand shifting stars eat stuff that is good for the sandbed and that they will starve in a 200 gallon tank. I don't believe everything that I read so any thoughts out there in the BAR world? Maybe the edited "Holy doodoo" will get em talkin'

IME... I would say that sand sifting stars eat large amounts of detritus and uneaten fish food in a home aquarium making him a great reef candidate in an established tank 75+ gallons with a 3+ inch sandbed. He is capable of moving large amounts of sand and IME is a great sand sifter. In smaller tanks or tanks with thin sand bottoms the starfish can starve and will burrow in the sand and rot causing issues like any other dead animal in your tank.

Benefit: They move the sand about, stirring it up. Absolutely great if all you want is sand for looks

Downfall: They move the sand about, stirring it up. They could potentially disturb some anaerobic areas basically making point of a DSB useless.

Thanks guys :)
Any more thoughts/opinions out there?
I heard they eat beneficial critters. Is that a rumor?

If they are starving they will go after very small snails, starfish and crabs from what I understand. Kinda like us.... if your truly starving... you can eat many things you wouldn't normally.
