I truly think the only way around this would be to purchase captive bred livestock.

At least most of the food fish harvested are eaten, unlike the countless ornamental fishes that end up in the trash or down the toilet.

sure they're eaten, but how many fish are wasted too? catch that is the wrong type, fish that spoil due to refrigeration malfunctions, food waste in the restaurant industry.

Bottom line is you very well can make a successful argument that fish as a food source is getting "good use" out of them, but that's kind of my point as to why we don't treat fish similar to cats and dogs.
