Full Article Here

The number of species identified in the waters off Japan has been measured at 33,629, 14.6 percent of the 230,000 ocean-dwelling species identified around the world, joint research by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTC) and others has found.

Of the identified species, 1,872 were determined to be unique to Japan's waters. Japan's waters were found to be a treasure trove of marine species, holding a greater variety than the ocean waters of any other nation in the world. The results of the study have appeared in the electronic version of the American science journal "PLoS ONE," dated Aug. 2.
