MDs 90 Gallon Shallow Reef

Hey guys!

This will be the tank journal for my new 90 Gallon Acrylic. Same foot print as the lowboy but 18” vs 10”. I really wanted something with sand that I can use as a display for coral. The lowboy is awesome to grow frags but would be hard to put sand in it without blowing it all over the place given its height. A lot of the equipment will be transferred over including the sump and lights, minus the return pump which I decided to upgrade. I do want to get new lights and use these Nicrews for the second tank I got… but that’ll be a question for later. I picked up the tank 11/12 from Tu’s house. Today 11/13 I’m working on the plumbing and hoping to get it wet tomorrow! Here are current specs:

Aquarium: Custom Advanced Acrylics 90 Gallon (48x24x18)
Stand: DIY
Sump: Trigger Systems Platinum 34
Lighting: Two Nicrew HyperReef LED 150W
Return Pump: Jebao DCP-15000
Protein Skimmer: AquaMaxx FC-120
Heaters: Two Eheim Jager 300W on Inkbird ITC-306a
Powerheads: Two Ecotech MP10s
Doser: TBD?
Controller: TBD?
Salt: Instant Ocean Reef Crystals

Sooner or later I want for the new 200s. I already have the 2 150s, but thinking the upgrade for this deeper 200 gallon tank would be more effective when I get it. The tank comes with 3 kessil 360 tuna blues not sure if they are good enough or not on such a large tank. But I'm also considering taking 1-2 of them and putting on my biocube32 if i can get a kraken reef lid or similar.

Would be eager to know @MarcosDelgado0 what lights you are considering. Also what are your aims for coral sps, lps, or mix reef?

I’m looking at two ReeFi Uno 2.1 Pros. It would be LPS dominant

I’m going to order a custom one but I just need to measure the radius first. Going to reach out to clearview Monday to place my order
Why measure? Make a template by tracing it with a piece of cardboard. Or get the CAD cutout from the manufacturer. Did John with advance acrylics make it? Ask him if it’s available. I was thinking of doing that to make vented lids for my tank, as it has poly covers

I did ask him if he had the CAD file but he said it was a random round over so he wasn’t sure of the radius :(

Sooo after some long delays I’m finally ready to make progress on this tank. Long story short- I had to go to the ER twice two weeks apart and it wasn’t until the second time that they figured out what the issue was and turns out I have to have surgery. I thought I was going to take advantage of the time I took off work to get some progress going but I didn’t end up doing anything lol. BUT I’m finally ready to start.

One issue came up and now I’m thinking about starting on the 45 Gallon Frag (36x24x12) that I also got from Advanced Acrylics to move all my live stock over and then work on this tank when my aquascape is ready. Issue is, I priced out what it would cost for my to build an aquascape and after some thought and also flashbacks to the last time I built my own scape… I decided to order a custom scape from Reef Rock Oasis. Lead time is about a month so it wouldn’t really make sense to start on the 90 Gallon and then have to figure out how to add the aquascape in later into a running tank. I saw his work a few CFMs ago and it was amazing. There was one particular piece I liked but when I asked him about it, he said he had just sold it 10min prior and was just holding it :( I followed him on Instagram that day and I told myself I’d get one of his scapes when I get another display tank. He’s a super nice guy and really easy to work with. He sent me a bunch of pictures of scapes he’s done before and I ended up narrowing it down to one. He had several cool designs but I ended up with this one because it’ll give me a lot of places to mount coral but also it looks more “full” so there’s hiding places for fish and I plan on adding some more pieces when I get the final scape to create more hiding spots and caves. This specific one was made for a 36” tank so the one he makes for me will be sized up to fit in the 48x24 foot print. Plan is to use this scape in the display and mix in a few pieces of the ocean live rock I have and then also have a bunch of the live rock in the sump.
