I think at this point most of us are aware of randy's recipe for mixing up your own 2 part (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php)

But my question is if your using the 2 part sold at a place like BRS it comes pre-packaged, however if you get it from one of our sponsers like aquatic collection and buy the Calium and the soda ash, what sould one add in powered form to 1 gallon of water?

Everytime I get into one of these cost saving ideas I 2nd guess myself as far as messurments, so any help would be great.
 
I'm not finding anything except for the article I posted.

the reason I am bringing this up as I don't know the concentration of the AC calicum and Soda Ash, but in reading that article it makes refference to using simlar stuff, just wondering if one of the reef siencists here has a formula they can seggust.
 
I use 2.25c soda ash per gallon, and 2.5c Calcium to one gallon. I reckon that the concentrations are very similar, I'd imagine that they are buying from the same sources.

Also the difference on the CA amounts is due to the following from the previous link:

If you use an anhydrous calcium chloride (such as Kent's Turbo Calcium or Peladow Calcium Chloride (a brand sold by Dow that some believe may just be a dehydrated equivalent of the Dowflake), then you should use about 20% (1/5) less solid calcium chloride to make the recipe. Note that the solution will get quite hot when dissolved anhydrous calcium chloride.

So both answers above are right, depending on what you buy.

I recently mixed a batch and the CA mix is 2 1/4 cups of Calcium Chloride Dihydrate crystals to a gallon of water. Here's the instructions offered by Bulk Reef Supply:

All solids dissolved completely in my mixes following these instructions.

Note: After dosing, The ALK will precipitate into soft piles of mush in your sump if you don't choose a dosing discharge area with good circulation! I choose to run the ALK dosing pump in the early morning hours for 55 minutes. The CA pump runs in the late afternoon for the same run time. My pumps discharge about 1.5 ml a minute.

I liked the Drew's pumps pricing and simplicity. I picked them up from BRS at the same time as the large Two Part kit.

I plan to switch from the timers I'm using now to the Apex controller if it ever comes in. :tired:
