Moving

Still have not been able to get the tank under control. Have added second reactor with GFO and have been doing 20% water changes each week for the past month.

Any suggestions?

Mike

After moved our 55g month later develop diatom brown algae all over the place. The same moving technique was used for our other tank which is doing great. In fact it is doing better then before the move. The levels for nitrate and phosphate are not detectable in 55g Skimmer is working overtime. We added an extra reactor and loaded with GFO and up the water changes from 10% weekly to 20%. Just have not seems improvement. In fact we have started to see hair algae starting. We are just looking for some advice of possible next steps or just hold tight.

I had the same problem a few months back when I removed a 4 inch sandbed that was 5 years old out of my 240 gallon. the diatoms went crazy and took over the tank. plus fish started dropping like flies. I had 32 fish and ended up with 11. I added another bag of chemi pure elite and a whole container of kent reef carbon. So I had 2 46 oz chemi pure elite bags and I believe 1 or 2 qts of reef carbon. the next day my tank was free of all diatoms and the lights remained on. I never used GFO only the other two brands. big fan of the chemi pure elite. I run it every day with my skimmer skimming wet. good luck. I thought about breaking the 240 gallon down because I was getting so frustrated with the diatoms. was consuming my tank like it was the thing to do. so all in all I would run more carbon than you need for a few days and it should take out whatever silicates and crap in the water. I believe Tuberider suggested this to run more carbon when I asked and his suggestion saved my tank and my passion to make my tank what it is today. So thanks again tuberider.

What are the down sides to AlOH based phosphate removers? Benefits of GFO over this?

Al can leach out over time. GFO has no Al.
If you have a source on this info, I'd be really curious to read it.
