My tank is running 82.5 and everything is REALLY happy ???

I once thought that running my tank hotter like in the natural environment would be a good idea but others stated it was a bad idea and of course would lead to increased algae problems. So at my tanks expense I went for a little experiment. I have been running a max temp of 83 and a low temp at night of 79. Over the last 30 days or so my tank has never looked better. I am getting great polyp extensions on all SPS, LPS are open and the softies are loving it. I have had no change in algae production nothing my CUC can keep up with. Can anyone explain this?

What do you mean? Over time it will catch up with me or that there is a fine line and I am almost crossing into the danger zone?
 
More towards the latter I would say. You keep food in the fridge to keep it from spoiling for a longer amount of time. Spoiling is just bacteria/mold/other yummy stuffs growing on it. Take the same food out and in the warmer room temp they'd be growing faster. Give them a nice 78*F with enough humidity and I'm sure there are tons of microbes that would set up shop in no time. But you up that temp to 212*F and just about all of them go bye bye.

More or less the same deal in our tanks in my mind. Too low and not as much growth. Increase the temp and life moves faster, but increase it too much and proteins denature etc etc.
 
Yep, faster growth at higher temps.

But if something goes wrong in your tank, you can have less time to save it due to the higher metabolic rate of the system and the reduced O2 solubility at higher temps.

If you have a bacterial bloom and/or crash, the crash happens faster.

I keep the tank towards the low end of the range for added safety factor during power outages and temperature spikes.
 
I've actually lowered my tank temp to slow down evaporation, even though I use kalk and theoretically should welcome the higher evaporation rate! I now run between 79-81 before it was a few degrees higher. Amazing how a degree or two can really affect evap!

mine has been running at about 82.5 also. my MH kick out the heat. worries me if we have a heat wave or something. ive been looking into the best way to keep the tank cool. that doesnt cost lots of money.
 
If your tank temp around 82 at this time, you might have problem in the summer... My tank is around 77 right now. The fan is not even running.. You guys might want to look into getting a chiller..

yeah, one big fan over your sump will really drag the temps down if needed.

This is one reason I want a controller, I want to set it that...

temps exceed 82, turn off one MH
temps exceed 83, turn off the other MH
temps exceed 84, turn on sump fan

(And then on/off the other direction)
temps drop back down to < 84, turn off fan, temps drop below 83, turn MH back on, etc...
