Ozone generator

I noticed that a few of you guys run ozone.
I have a corona discharge ozone generator that was left over from a spa project new in the box.
I puts out 0.1 liters per hour of ozone.
Is this OK to use on my skimmer intake?
What max ORP level would you set to have it turn off?
Do I need to run carbon if I use ozone?
I was told that ozone could kill the entire tank.
Thanks in advance.
Jon

I run ozone and have an ORP probe to monitor it that is hooked up to my AC3.

I am not sure about your unit and what level it should be set to. I am using an Ozotech 150 and I have it set to "2". (Not that that means anything. :p)

My ORP runs in the low 300s typically. I have noticed it drop when i feed or something dies in the tank. I don't run carbon and have the ozone pumped into my skimmer air intake.

I'm happy running ozone and have been for a few years now.

I maintain @ 450. Definitely with carbon. Only way is w/ a skimmer. No way can it kill the tank unless you do not do your research prior to running.

Randy Holmes Farley has some interesting articles on ozone on RC. Try searching for those. I think it matters less what the actual ORP reading is and more about managing the fluctuation... i.e.: Don't raise it too fast, etc...

Here you go....

Here's the question though, I recall hearing a long time ago if you run ozone your water will look crystal clear almost like everything is floating in mid air (i.e. you can't see the water) true or not? :D

I still have one of those old enaly ozone generators that I never used.

True, I have a few large (300+) peninsula tanks that I run O3 on if you look from end to end the water is crystal clear, I usually don't use much carbon on those tanks.

Thanks Jason and Jimmy It looks like the ozone generator that I have should work.
I'm going to try to modify the silencer on the skimmer to inject the ozone into the skimmer.
I think I'll start out slowly.

This is strange. My ORP is running at 425 without ozone.
I need to look into the accuracy of my ORP probe before I continue.

I've worked with ozone for about 6 years in school...very nasty stuff, but effective at oxidizing and killing stuff. I'd be very very tempted to chase the ozone line with a carbon canister prior to returning to the tank. You don't want ozone (even low levels) in your livestock region.

If you input ozone into your skimmer, how do you run the skimmed water through carbon? I'm assuming you just do some sort of passive carbon filtration? I run a carbon filter in a phosban reactor, but it's on a separate line...

Ya, passive. Anywhere which passes ozoneated water before entering the tank (after skimmer if on feed, before or after return etc) I have have no measurements or experience with carbon in reefs so it may not be necessary.

In ~20 years of using ozone I've never run it through carbon, call me crazy, but I've not had any problems with it either skimming or in an 03 reactor.

i have read that running ozone deterioate your seals. ie orings or any rubber seals in your tank. Have anyone experience this before while running ozone?

Jeremy, not even ozone over the skimmer vents? As Tony said that's some nasty stuff, unless the skimmer is outside, I don't know that I'd run it under a tank without carbon over where it hits the surface.

DrD: What I've heard is that the plastics can become brittle, also depends upon the type of acrylic used, then again you could always simply make a ozone "reactor".. basically some PVC tubing with an airstone in it.

YOUR CRAZY!
You asked for it.
I'm gonna wait. My tank is humming right now and I don't want to dissolve my new skimmer right away!

I ran ozone into my old Euroreef CS6-2 for years with no problem. Seals and plastic seemed the same as when I got it.

Lots of skimmers now are rated for ozone. Not sure about MSX, but probably fine.

i hope i am not derailing this thread but what's a decent ozone system to start with?

i looked online and there are tons of models ranging $50-$500.
