palytoxin

So on wednesday, I had my hands in the tanks and broke off a piece of rock with some palys that were getting out of control. The paly mucus covered a finger that had a torn cuticle. Today the tip to first joint has swelled and is quite painful. After you stop laughing at me for not wearing gloves, has anybody else had a similar experience? How many days did it last? I can type with it but if the cut area is touched, it hurts!

Better talk to Mario on this one.

If you haven't gone to the Doctor or ER, please go now, NOW and be sure to tell them about your tank and that they might want to check for Mycobacterium marinum, even though it doesn't sound like it is myco.

Swelling and pain after tank maintenance = ER visit.

I hope you got your ass to the ER last night Mario, the prospect of loosing a body part is not something you want to live through believe me..

That and Vibrio. I kinda suspect a vribrio infection. Neither are something to wait on going to the ER/DR for!

etc etc

What a day and must say thank you for the support.
After a long day at the hospital I'm back; seems a horrible accident on Ocean Ave. kept ER very busy.
I was given antibiotics and need to continue for seven days, pain has gone down. Rich was so right and thanks for the info on the bacteria, it saved doctors some time I guess. Must go back tomorrow for a hand surgeon? to look at my hand. Honestly I don't see why a surgeon would have to look into it but better safe than sorry and I should leave it to a pro.
I remember Leslie Harris making that comment on wearing gloves...

Erin,
Rather than frag your fingers...
Follow the exact same procedure to make a DBTC chain for the turbinaria. Since you are so good at creating chains it should be simple.

I'm not discounting the toxin issue here but after Tony's post there's not a lot more to say.

Just go straight to the Hospital and let the person taking your vital signs of the potential Micobacterium Marinum? AND let the doctor know of the same issue; one of the doctors that saw me seemed not to be aware of some marine infectious diseases and was sort of assuming something else.
Pain was horrible all the way to my shoulder, hand and elbow joints felt the worst pain.
My cut was very superficial I would say similar to what you have. I spent about three days in pain, was given the option of narcotic pain killer but I have a family to care for, drive here and there so I passed, Antibiotics for over a week.

well, I'm still alive! no hospital visit. did soak my hand in hot water with epsom salts friday night. this morning, the swelling has gone down and ripped the scab to squeeze a bit of puss out. followed by some peroxide.
I must say that in the past 2 days my finger felt best when I had my hands in my tanks. I spent yesterday afternoon catching and bagging a bunch of African cichlids and doing normal tank stuff.
keep on keepin on!
thanks to all for your concern and recomendations.

I was really hoping for a more cerebral experience like in Calfo's Handbook of Coral Propagation
