Cali Kid Corals

Patio's IM 75 EXT

The tank is running on just limewater. The tentative plan is to remove the top right rock once the kalk reactor can't keep up with demand. It seems I am about halfway to maxed out at the moment. If our first baby expected this coming July doesn't tire me out too bad, I may replace that space with some tougher sticks with room to grow upwards. If too tired/busy, I will just start the forest fire digi and spongodes over as frags and remove the rock.

Why are you planning to remove this area exactly? Just curious, because it looks great to me.

I like the look too and thank you! PM if you want some chunky frags of either.

I like the simplicity of not needing more than limewater to keep cal and alk up. I assume those two corals will continue to grow, and may require more limewater than I can add. That and I would like to try some tougher sps corals in that section and let them grow more upward.

I wanted those corals to drive up limewater consumption in the early days so I could benefit from a higher ph. As all the corals have grown in, I may no longer need the help of the top right corals and eventually may not be able to keep up with them with just limewater. Eventually I will prorbably need to add more than just limewater but I would like to see how far I can push it.

I see. Thank you very much for the clarification (and for the offer!!). The limitations of limewater are an interesting issue, but this is why the slurry could be beneficial? Or are you already maxiing this out too? Or you do not like it being potentially unpredicable regarding its strength?

I think I am at around half capacity now which is nice because I move slow. I push through an Avast reactor. I really should pay more attention to how I add more powder to the reactor. Every other week I just dump in maybe around 3/4 cup? In the future I suppose I could add enough powder to consider it a slurry IDK? I have seen others add zip ties or something similar to keep the powder suspended in the reactor. I am not at that point or need at the moment.

Lurking around reefcentral I noticed some of my old photos had photobucket watermarks through them. So I paid the 5 bucks to reopen my account for a month. I will figure out a better way to store them than photobucket. Might as well save a couple here!

Jaebo tank about 40 gallons with t-5 hood. Bought used from Quang at Sun Aquarium on capitol ave in San Jose (if anyone knows Quang and has contact info, please hit me up!). Tank had rounded front corners and turtle shell trim lol so tacky but I loved it. This was maybe its third rendition by 2006 after several moves. I don't know what year. Photo bucket says I uploaded it in 2006.

Don't remember this one at all:

Young dumb and fun desk setup for mantis shrimp. 70W metal halide, DIY over flow and a desk fan to keep cool. Tank on bottom right for keeping snail and hermit feeders. I later learned that it was dumb to have so much light above a mantis, and of course in general in that tight space.:

I love the old photos! Mine on there got ransomed by Photobucket too but luckily I had backups somewhere. Your old setup reminded me of the 70w metal halide I had on my nano cube on top of a mini fridge in my dorm!

The medical doser was next level too! Really cool.

Awesome tank, love the contrast between the slimeball, stylo, and red digi. Those big, bold, fast growing corals are great for that. I have the same thing going with the same three corals in my tank too.

Thanks Derek. The green is spongodes montipora. The end goal was to remove the rock with the spongodes and forest fire to make room for slower growers but one of the anthias has made a tunnel and home through the middle of the spongodes which has been enjoyable to watch. The game is afoot...

Haha yeah I considered pulling out my bigger colonies to make way for "fancier" corals too but changed my mind. All the rainbow acros (which I do love...) just look kinda brown from a few feet away, but the big bold "easy" corals look stunning from across the room.

Arg, mine as well. I do have back-ups, but man, wading through dozens of old drives suuuucks

My lfs here had a great deal on emerald crabs for $5, I've never seen them that cheap! You are more than welcome to pick one up next time you come through Vegas.

The tank looks great, nice work.

Got this from battle corals a few years ago but have long since forgotten what the heck it is or what its was supposed to look like. The thing tried dying several times but would dull out and go dormant instead. Last couple of days the colors has been perking up and some peach color at the tips. Hopefully it is finally happy and considers growing.

Just shy of a year update lol. It is trying. During a water change last weekend I noticed more peach/orange from the top down perspective. Not much more size though.

What’s the “flat” thing under the purple stylo?
Porites. I believe it is the tyree- pink polyps with a kinda light blueish silverish base. It started as a thumbnail frag. I left it on the frag plug way too long so it started to bowl out in shape rather than encrust. So I have just let it keep on bowling out. Its still moveable. Maybe size of an open hand now and very heavy. I wish it had christmas tree worms coming out of it though!
