Pellet Food Only?

I am nearing the end of my Sera Marin granules pellet food sample, and will need to buy more eventually. It has been working for me, but are there any differences between pellet food brands? Also, how important is a varied diet (i.e. seaweed, frozen foods)?

Important. IMO, New Life Spectrum are the best readily available pellets. Different fish will have different dietary needs. Some need more seaweed, others meaty foods. Variety is good. To my knowledge, it contributes a lot to overall health and coloration of fish.

I feed NLS Thera A, Spirulina, and a mixture of frozen foods. Mysis, blood worms, cyclopeze, brine and some others which I forgot the name of. I also soak the above in selcon and garlic. Not sure if this part is necessary but it's worked well for me so far. Also, Rod's food if I happen to be near a store that sells it.

My primary food is New life Spectrum thera A but I also give my fish nori about 2x per week and Arctipods

A varied diet is good for most fish - granted that is a big generalization since every fish is a little different.

When I feed dry pellets it varies from New Life Spectrum to Sera or whatever else on hand.

I'm not sure how complete a diet it is, but I use Otohime into the mix, and all my fish love it..even the ones who can't get it in their mouth

Cool thanks for all the info. Seems like New Life Spectrum is the better of the brands. Should I use Marine or Therma+ A formula?

Also, I will do some Nori if necessary. Also have some Mysis and Rod's Foods sitting in freezer (I bought as backup in case any of the fish didn't accept pellet, but they all do).

I feed any pellet feeds that DO NOT contain ethoxyquin. Very few don't have it... pretty sure NLS does.

Ethoxyquin is a quinoline-based antioxidant used as a food preservative and a pesticide (under commercial names such as "Stop-Scald"). It is commonly used as a preservative in pet foods to prevent the rancidification of fats. There has been some speculation that ethoxyquin in pet foods might be responsible for multiple health problems. To date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only found a verifiable connection between ethoxyquin and buildup of protoporphyrin IX in the liver, as well as elevations in liver-related enzymes in some animals, but there are no known health consequences from these effects.[2] Until further evidence is reported, the FDA has asked pet food manufacturers to voluntarily limit ethoxyquin levels to 75 ppm.[2] However, most pet foods that contain ethoxyquin have never exceeded this amount.[2]

Ethoxyquin has been shown to cause mortality in fish.

Otohime is one of a few that does not contain it. Most frozen feeds don't, except for Cyclop-Eeze I know used to, it was in their marketing for a while.

Coincidentally, cyclopeeze is the one of my three dry feeds (of course, I also have my "wet" RN goods :-D)

Otohime, Cyclop-Eeze, and Aquathrive. Oh, and nuri, but that isn't even close to a pellet lol.

AquaThrive doesn't have it either While I am at Reed we'll never sell a product with it in it. Monsanto (who developed it in the 50's) does not bring good things to life, they bring GMO and mutations to life

And if you go to Mansanto's website I bet they say the same thing Of course some one using it in their product is going to say it's ok. And NLS FAILS on the fact the talk was started well prior to the invention of the internet. Breeders really started talking about it in the late 60's/ early 70's. Funny how they don't mention that and go for the "anything can be said on the internet and things get blown out of proportion on it" :lol:

Fact is DVM's have seen a vast increase in cancer and other problems in pets since it first was used in pet food. NO commercial hatchery will allow it in their food as they recognize the problem.

RN does not make any pellet feeds no does it have any in it's product line It goes against the RN philosophy. All our products are either live plants, live animals, or no live liquid concentrates.

We are North American Distributors for two pellet feeds that do not have it. One is solely sold as a commercial hatchery feed and the other is sold into both aquaculture and marine ornamental.

You must have some odd idea about me and think I am pushing this to make a buck... and you couldn't be more wrong!!!! I pushed this far before I worked at Reed Mariculture. I have pushed for most my pet projects well prior to working at Reed. It's health of the animals whether it be net collecting, shipping practices, husbandry, breeding, etc.

My sister is a DVM (Oncologist - small animal cancer specialist). Grandmother is a dog breeder and circuit judge. My Aunt is a dog breeder and circuit judge (dog show circuit). My great uncle is a well known circuit judge. On the other side my grandfather was a commercial fisherman and a tree farmer. This is in my blood

I believe the variety of foods I give my fish played a big role in my clownfish spawning. I feed live (1 food), frozen (5 foods), and pellet (2 foods). I give them one live feeding, one frozen, and pellets each day, but I make each feeding very small.
So I would definitely recommend buying a large variety of foods.

Haha...No, not at all. Never questioned your intentions and I know you're not pushing it for the $...Actually never thought of that until you mentioned it. It's just that I already know who sells RN products and they sell themselves =) Drygoods without preservatives in them seem like a specialty item that I'm not too familiar with =P

So actuallllly, you couldn't be more wrong You have high credibility marks in my book so don't worry about that lol.
