Plumbing question - potential problems reducing pipes

How detrimental would it be to run a return at 1" from the pump, reduced to 1/2" (at the bulkhead) and then converted to 3/4" for the Sea-Swirl? I'm looking at around 600 gpm.

I'm thinking of using one of the holes in the AGA overflow as the return. Currently, I have a 1" return line that goes around and over the tank.
 
My current setup (AGA 120g) is a 1.5" coming from a Reeflo Snapper (2500gph) to a 1.5" check valve to a 1.5" ballvalve to a 1.5" tee that splits off to (2) 3/4" then up to the tank to (2) 3/4" Sea-Swirls with penductors. If I run without the penductors and leave the ballvalve wide open, the Sea-Swirls flow more water than the (2) overflows (600gph/ea) can handle. All PVC piping.

Are you sure your returns are only 1/2"?

I would think with a high pressure pump like an Eheim 1262 you might be able to get away with 1/2", but I'm not 100% sure.

I agree that head pressure doesn't affect the 1260 as much as the 1262. However, according to Marine Depot's chart the 1262 can flow 600gph at over 8' where as the 1260 can only flow 600gph up to 2', right?
