I agree that if it blows around with a hand wave, it is very unlikely to be a sponge.

Perhaps it is some sort of contaminant, which may have been covered in a bit of bacteria.
It does remind me of dryer lint.
Any fiberglass insulation work being done nearby?
 
Microscopes of more than enough quality are cheap and easy to come by.

Expertise to use them and interpret what you’re seeing is not.

If you find yourself wanting to borrow a club microscope you’d be much better off borrowing the technique and expertise of a club member with a microscope.
 
I see some stuff mixed into the tufts that sort of looks like pineapple sponges? Do you have any pineapple sponges that could be getting shredded up by pumps?
