Return pump question

So now that I have a fancy vectra pump hooked up to mobius it's giving me the option of following a template. I understand the lights on a template but do I really need my return pump slowing to almost nothing every night? Wouldn't I just want that staying at a constant speed? Someone smarter or more informed than me please feel free to chime in. Thanks

It does. I have to remember to open the valve a little. Otherwise, it is noisy- but we’re upstairs, so we don’t hear it.

I'm a constant flow kinda guy -- only reason to modulate is if you are running close loop. Doesn't feel like it makes sense to mess with flow through rate across sump, etc. except for when I am feeding... and even then, i just let it run continuously.

I find modulating the return becomes a pain after I spent time balancing for quiet operation...

That is the default flow graph. I’m guessing you didn’t use the task to set up the COR?

The task will help you set the max and min flow. Chart should be a flat line. Or a single point.

Ecotech will ask you to use a template similar to Vortech for the Vectra pump. Just select any template and after calibration to fit with your tank, you can change them to anything you want later.
You can achieve your need by set the night time to feed mode. You can change feed mode to how strong or slow the flow are.

I didn't - I just played with different speeds based on when my WAVs were most turbulent. While I have spectacular flow; the combo of WAVs, Gyres, and the COR 20, was a bit too turbid.

I'll need to play with the task a bit then.

My only thought as to why you might want to lower flow at night is that perhaps that's when all the hidden little critters and "bugs" and other things that your corals may feed on come out to play, in fact that's when your corals tend to feed in general. And perhaps you want to minimize how much "food" potentially get filtered out of your system via whatever mechanisms you have in your sump.

Granted this is just a silly hypothesis, not sure if there's any basis behind doing this.

I feed corals around 5am with Oyster Feast, but I turn a feed mode on and only the WAVs are going at 1% for 25 mins.

I think the lower speed at night gives all the fish a chance to chill...yeah, that sounds good...I don't know.

the first thing I thought about when i saw thw graph... wouldn't the drain not be quite on some of these flow points.

My suggestion is also keep return pump in constant mode. If you want less flow at night then put the vortech to lagon mode and run at low percentage.

I would keep it constant. If you sized the pump properly, there’s really no benefit to varying your return pump speed every day. That’s what the circulation pumps are for.
