robot jellyfish

Do you mean these?

Agreed, they make for inferior overlords and don't spread very well. :p

LOL I didn't realize until now that one of the many terms for a school of jellyfish is a "smuck".

Cool photo! Do you dive in Monterey, Michael? I haven't gone recently, but many years ago on a night dive there, somehow I ended up swimming through a smuck of tiny jellyfish. They were a mesmerizing sight, and no concerns of stings through the 7mm wetsuit and full hood.

Hmm... a smuck... smuckers... no no no... it can't be... perhaps better overlords than you thought?

Yes I dive quite a lot, for both recreation and research. At the time of that photo, there was quite the smuck of jellies, some many feet long. Those are Chrysaora fuscescens or sea nettles and they have the unfortunate habit of hitting you right on the exposed skin around your regulator. Night dives are so much fun. Good chance you seen some sort of ctenophore or comb jelly.

Check out this site for some local species. They don't have the robot jelly fish listed yet though.
