Salt prices going up?

Pretty soon I will need to get more salt. I just finished looking at DF&S's website, and a 160g bucket of IORC mix is going for $46.99 ... last time I ordered this from them (earlier this year) I could've have sworn it was not more than $40. I just got off the phone with a LFS, and they are asking $39.99 for a bucket of IORC.
DF&S 160g bucket of SeaChem Reef Salt - $41.99; LFS wants $35.99.
Is it me, or is the price of salt mix going up online?
I guess I will be getting salt for the LFS's now.

I think the DF&S salt has gone up to reflect their shipping based on price model they used, rather than having a separate shipping cost for "heavy" items they simply raised the price on the salt (I could be wrong though)

Ah, so salt prices are the same (just about), but prices are simply being reflected differently because shipping must be factored in with online vendors, and not so with LFS's. I can't imagine too many people buying salt from DF&S then, unless they are used to buying it 5-10 buckets at a time, which I am sure some people do. but for people who buy 1-2 buckets at a time, a LFS seems like the better bet?

Oh I get an award? *beam*

Seriously though, it strikes me as strange that DF&S would do that method instead, going by the mentality of the average consumer they'll look at the base price and use that to base their buy/sell opinion on, rather than taking into account everything (taxes/or lack there of, shipping costs, etc).

But yeah, in SF you usually can find stuff VERY comparable if not better than DF&S on price, the stores typically make very little or no money on it, but it gets people in the stores. However this practice of "cheap salt" is relatively new, meaning that a lot more stores do this. Lucky Ocean, Aquatic Central, perhaps even Ocean Treasures. Wasn't too many years ago Lucky Ocean was one of the few places to get good deals on salt.

Luckily, I managed to buy 6 buckets of RC for $27.99 on sale from DrF&S before they jacked up the price to $46.99/.

btw, I think it is $46.99 + shipping right? So if you order one bucket, it would be a $57 bucket o' salt?!

32.99 a bucket... $10 shipping for 2 buckets ... $14 for 4 buckets... Not bad..

Anyone in SJ need salt?? I can buy couple buckets... LMK ..

anyone use seachem reef salt? What do you think compared to IORC?

I use it for work and my tanks seem to like it, It's made in the same plant as IORC. One thing though if you run a two-part or a Ca reactor it is out of balance for that type of setup. It's better for light duty reefs that don't need a lot of supplementation where your relying more on water changes for alk/ca/mag.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the salt Jeremy.
Why would dosing throw SeaChem Reef salt chemically off balance more so than other salts, say like IORC? I wasn't really planning on dosing two part in this new tank like I was in my last tank ... I was hoping 10% water changes every other week would keep alk/ca/mag up.

Then it's a good salt for you, if you run a reactor or two part then the Sea Chem will raise your #s and make for a PITA dialing thins in, where a salt that matches your parameters makes it a no brainer
