It's an oversaturation type of thing, your brain knows that things should not look that way, so when things are overly one color or another you can see the opposite side of the spectrum when you look away. Happens to me all the time when I go snowboarding, put on my goggles that initially make everything a reddish color, but very soon everything looks normal, but if I take off my goggles everything is overly blue (bluish snow, etc) this is because my brain shut down the red signals from my eyes, so everything lacks the reds and has a bluish look.
