Cali Kid Corals

Thoughts on sarcophyton toxins and SPS?

I was wondering if any of you have thoughts on keeping very large sarcophyton colonies in a mixed reef. I'm trying to maximize SPS growth and everything definitely grows, but some frags better than others. I have two very large toadstool leathers in the 170, one standard toadstool which is probably 12" across and another Tyree neon green toadstool which is 10" across.

I run carbon in a Phosban reactor... Do you think that the toadstools retard SPS growth in anyway? They take up a lot of space and I have debated about selling them off... if they did in fact slow down coral growth that'd be another black mark on them. :p (They are pretty though...)

the neons seem to be OK IME but the larger commons do seem to inhibit SPS growth.

I've seen tanks with large leathers in them with decent growth rates. I think carbon and water changes goes a long ways with helping to curb the allopathic effects of the fat Sarcophyton spp. you have. Also, when in doubt, drop more carbon :)
I think leathers are awesome as well :D

Retard growth? I have always had them in my tank, so I have nothing to compare it to. I just don't cut toadstools in the tank and I run carbon.
