Cool video of diy frag plugs

So agrocrete looks to be a poured castable material - like concrete. That means you mix it, a reaction starts, and it gets hard. Similar to plaster. To make those you’d need to make a silicon mold (flexible, so they can be removed after hardening) and then mix up just enough of the material...

Perfect - that makes complete sense. Also, the good news about flat discs - outrageously easy to make. Roll out a slab of clay using a rolling pin (or a slab roller, in a ceramics studio) and go to town with a cookie cutter. Shazzam - a gazillion flat discs.

So I just found a one plug in my cabinet with a stem, and measured the stem (~9mm diameter). Ideally, we'd want to identify early (here in this thread) the sizes of plugs we actually want. I can then pre-make a handful of molds for the different sizes. To keep things simple, it's probably...

Does anyone happen to have a set of calipers (or a ruler) and can check the diameter and length of the stem that comes out of the bottom of a frag plugs top plate? Once I get those, I'll go ahead and make the 3D models so I can print them, and then make a few plaster molds for casting these things.

Cool video of diy frag plugs

If someone wanted to give me the specs of the best frag-plug size, I can get a 3D model of the master-mold whipped up in just a few minutes. Flat discs would be outrageously easy to cast. Discs with a post are fairly easy, although marginally more complicated to slip-cast. Either way would...

Yes - a single plaster mold can be used to cast many many replicas. A couple hundred wouldn't be unusual before the mold degraded and lost its precision. If I were doing this, I'd make a single plaster mold that had spots for many 10 or 20 frag plugs, that way you'd get a gazillion of these...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

I do have the desire to host a little get-together for some of the active folks in the San Jose area at my house sometime this summer for pizza/beer/hanging-out... I could also work a little lesson on frag-plug casting into that, if any of those folks happened to be interested. Funny enough...

First-time Innovative Marine 15 gal cube

I haven't posted a tank journal update in here in a while, but we're doing great despite a few ups, downs, and lessons along the way (ex: don't point the return pump right at hammers - even after just a single day, it can kill off heads). But all in all, we are loving it. And after the last...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Michael: I have a couple kilns at the house (we have a pottery studio here in San Jose). I would be happy to fire any number of these that you cast. I also have probably 30 gallons of slip, and would be happy to give you enough slip to cast more plugs than you will ever have the...

Unfortunately our frag went from thriving to a fast decline a couple months back. I tried treatment dipping, freshwater dip, carefully scraping everything off the frag-plug in case there was some kind of intruder... but, in the end it continued to dissolve until it was fully gone. The cause is...
