    Sandbed in refugium?

Why only a single algae species To focus on the needs of one species, so it grows fast and experts a lot of nutrients. As opposed to managing one algae from overgrowing the other. Each of the algae need different conditions to maximize their growth - lighting, flow, micro nutrients. Generally...

    Sandbed in refugium?

Depends on the goal of the refugium. If it's to have safe space for some cool critters that wouldn't do well in the main display then sand might be a good choice. If it's for nutrient export stick with just a single algae species no rock no sand.

    Looking to switch Salt

I bought 4 boxes of the Reef Evolution from AC when they first announced their switch to it, with 2 boxes for $80. I cleaned out my mixing aquarium (40 breeder) with muriatic acid. Had been using IO and RC which left a lot of residue. Was planning for Reef Evolution to be lower alk, as stated in...

    Dinoflagellates vs. UV

I use a small Amazon uv on my quarantine whenever the skimmer acts up at night, there's that particular smell that dinos have. Usually knocks it out in a day or 2. Used a jebao 36 watt unit on my 240 system which got over run with dinos after starting with bleached rock. I am very positive on...

    Hydros X3 Controller review

Their customer service has been good as well. I had a defective x2 and xp8 both items they were quick to reply, emailed me a FedEx prepaid tag, and repaired the items. I really like the modular functionally instead of one head unit.

    Coral dipping!

50% Bayer Bioadvanced 50% tank water aggressively swirl frag for 1 min. Followed by 1 minute aggressive swirl in rinse container with 100% tank water. Then cut off base, remount, quarantine tank. I have a second stage quarantine tank but revently found aptasias in it. So I guess I'm still not...

    Plumbing a UV filter

My main recommendation would be to make it easy to remove and service you can mess with flow rate once installed. So you can take it off the system once not needed, to replace to bulb after a year+-, etc. I find them useful for initial setup to manage the green water and dino booms. If this is...

Just purchased a Parwise Meter, we'll see how it works...

I am wondering how it will compare to the seneye. Somehow it seems to be the grownup brother. I compared my seneye to one of the club meters not to long ago and honestly they were really close and differed more at the high end and depended more on the angle/water movement. Just a pain to get a...

    Red Pulsing Xenia

The tile thing works pretty well. The current aquarium is acrylic so I used white plastic tiles which are a bit too light and slick (harder to get things to attach. But in previous glass aquariums I used travertine tiles from home Depot which worked very well.

    Red Pulsing Xenia

I have the ruby red xenia from Marine Farmers. It's cool. Grows to large stalks and not too invasive. It really doesn't pulse much. I'm in San Jose berryessa area. If you want some I'm going to get rid of some.

    Custom sump feedback

Looks cool, always fun to build new fish stuff. Where are the heaters and chemical filtration? Assuming the layout is relative to access, I would move the reefmate to the front and red dragon to the back. Thinking the reefmate will have more hands on in the sump (fixing jams, changing roller...
