Algae scrubbers vs refugium: DIY, pros/cons?

Yeah, I fell for it and found myself with an expensive L shaped piece of pvc pipe, you can see in Patio's photo what it is. It does have some LED light in the housing, but I just checked mine and one set of lights is dead, and another is so dim it provide no light. It still has two lights in...

Looking for Trochus snails - which Reefer/LFS might have some?

Hi guys. In the past I've added hundreds of astrea snails to my tanks, each one eventually becomes an empty shell on the sand. I have in my tank, however 4 or 5 big trochus snails that I introduced at the same time I added like 40 Astreas, and they are the last snails standing. I believe it is...

Algae scrubbers vs refugium: DIY, pros/cons?

Eh, I wish I did that. Instead I was an idiot and paid over $300 for a Santa Monica Rain2 ATS which is .... a PVC tube with a slit in it and a screen that hangs off it, also fed by a maxijet. The only thing it offers beyond DIY is that it is enclosed in a light proof box and has waterproof red...

    RODI Water Storage

A spigot also means you have to put the container up high so you can actually use the spigot! V

    Protein skimmer

A "nano tank", as mentioned, should be fine with water changes. Having said that, when I had a 10g glass tank, I had algae problems and I put a Piece Of Crap Prizm skimmer on it that did nothing but overflow. (I'm angry about it because I bought it at a fish store and the sales guy who convinced...

    RODI Water Storage

Well I know the rubbermaid "brute" trashcans are a tried and trusted product. The material hasn't caused any unsafe water conditions as far as I've ever read about. My suggest though, is to use a brute ROUND garbage can instead of that square storage box. The sides will bulge out on that box...

    free tanks 125g, 50g, 30g, lowboy Rocklin

I had a tank like that acrylic 27g, and it made an excellent sump. I glued in two baffles and routed out some of the top reinforcing acrylic. Just an FYI if anyone is dismissing that 27. If I were closer, I'd take one off your hands as a top off container, but I'm not. I hope they find new...

    Instant ocean 26 dollars

Is there a link? When I search for it, I see 4 buying options, but none of them is $26. Maybe I missed it. V

Recommend a good "gyre" type pump please!

So it's been 4 years and I haven't replaced that pathetic back pump yet. Now that the RedSea Reefwave has been out for a few years... any changes in recommendations? For now I'm just throwing a maxijet back there to augment flow, but think a fancy gyre pump might still be the ticket. V

    LF HOB overflows and opinions

That Maggie Muffler looks like a productized "Stockman Standpipe", which in itself is a variation of the "Durso Standpipe", all self named by the people who came up with them. I do like that the Maggie Muffler has an angled intake, that makes a lot of sense! Heck, even AGA/Oceanic's "Megaflow"...

    EMERGENCY: HEATER MALFUNCTION (PLEASE HELP)

I have a ranch controller I will be installing this weekend. I have two eheims in the DT that are probably not well coordinated or calibrated. Why so hot? It creeped up on me while I was in my “this tank is so full of aiptasia, I don’t care” frustrated mode when I neglected it for a long time...

    EMERGENCY: HEATER MALFUNCTION (PLEASE HELP)

My tank wanders around 82 to 83. It it been like that a while so I guess my corals are acclimated to it. If you go buy a heater tomorrow, buy two.

    Dying gsp? Too much calcium?

What is your alkalinity measurement? I believe Calcium and Carbonate are on a see-saw where a very high value of one means a very low value of the other. if you find your dKH is low (below 7) you can boost it with baking soda (look up how to mix up the carbonate part of DIY 2-part!). That may...

    LF HOB overflows and opinions

If algae or a snail blocks part of the return line, then you can overpower the drain with the return pump. In your case, not a problem. Like I said I had mine on a 10g tank which has almost no margin for error! V

    LF HOB overflows and opinions

I used an HOB overflow on my 10g nano tank when I first started in the hobby. I think it flooded at least four times. Things I learned; 1) You must absolutely find a failsafe. You need a way to shut off your return pump if you detect low water levels. With modern controllers that shouldn't be...

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

I finally got a new pH probe and fresh calibration (7 and 10) solutions. However, my Pinpoint Monitor display was acting up, so I used an ancient AquaController Jr as the pH monitor. I calibrated it at 7 and 10, but after calibration, dunking the probe back into the 7.0 solution shows 7.02. I...
