    7th SF(area) tank tour...... Sept 25th

I'm in if there's still room, and I can show the Steinhart, as long as there is a manageable group of 20 or less BAR members. I've got to be really firm on that last part. I can drive, so Patrick you can roll with me if you want.

Skeeters in my rock curing tubs! Help!

The only reason it could make some sense to use freshwater to cure rocks that were intended to go in a saltwater tank would be if they were homemade/DIY concrete in composition.

    Tanked - New TV series

It was absolutely Thaumoctopus and not Wunderpus. Light cream bands alternating with darker grey on very long arms...I suppose it could be some odd species I've never heard of but it looked like every Thaumoctopus I've seen in photos. I mean, I hate to say it, but does Justin have some...

Good place to window shop for tanks?

I've come to the conclusion that if I'm setting up a tank I've got to see the thing in person first instead of ordering online. Any places in the Bay that have a good stock of smaller aquariums laying around? I'm specifically looking for something glass, rimless, open top, with a built in...

    Tanked - New TV series

Yeah, where do the fish hide? In the gumballs? I can't imagine those fish doing well in that empty sphere for very long. Really sad. Rich can tell you too, but Thaumoctopus is found exclusively on vast expanses of mucky/silty sediment that they can bury themselves in. A small tank with...

Skeeters in my rock curing tubs! Help!

God's sake, don't put soap in there! I'm confused, are you curing concrete rocks?

    Tanked - New TV series

I think I will start stating my experience in gallons. "I have 200,000 gallons of reefkeeping experience!" (must be said in booming Charlton Heston-esque voice) Has anyone seen a Tanked aquarium on one of the episodes after, say, a month or so? I'd like to see how the mimic octo is...

Kold Sterile, Kati Ani Resins vs RODI Questions

Hi Mike, as far as I understand they are the exact same types of beads, just mixed together rather than in separate canisters. I don't know enough about the chemistry of it to know why mixing them together produces purer water, but that's what the folks at Siemens tell me. :D

Kold Sterile, Kati Ani Resins vs RODI Questions

There is a difference between separate cation bed/anion bed and a true mixed bed (both resins are blended together), in that the mixed bed will produce slightly lower conductivity (purer) water. Separated beds might be better if you plan to regenerate the resin and don't want to bother...

    2 mp40 or 1 mp60??

Well I know how to work the controller, and on its minimum setting it was too much flow for a 200g tank. It was tearing Tubastrea polyps 6' away from the prop. To fully utilize the power of that pump I would want to use it on at least a 400 or 500g tank to really spread its wings. I will...

    Tanked - New TV series

Just like the show, no explanation...are these like tank medications are additives or something?

    Tanked - New TV series

I just feel bad for the maintenance guys who have to take care of the tanks long after the cameras go away. These guys are clearly under some pressure to make the tanks look spectacular for the show (meaning more fish and bigger fish) which does not necessarily translate to long term viability...

    2 mp40 or 1 mp60??

I would go with 2 40s. The 60 is almost too powerful for tanks smaller than 6' or so.

SF tap water--how do you treat?

Erin, that's the only filter you use? That bit about the filters needing to be replaced every 150,000 gallons even close to true?

SF tap water--how do you treat?

I'm thinking I could just go with DI and/or GAC to make up some water at home. So what does everyone in SF use to make up their water? Full blown RO/DI seems a bit overkill for a 20-30g tank with LPS and softies...

Steinhart Aquarists head to the Philippines

In this case with Cespitularia in this region it was quite literally the middle of the day when we first noticed it (@ 11:30am). The eggs/larvae were also negatively buoyant, which was news to me. I think it's fair to say there are a whole lot of unknowns about the way corals spawn, and they...

Steinhart Aquarists head to the Philippines

CAS is a member of an initiative that already does this in the Caribbean: SECORE. http://www.secore.org/ The idea is that we harvest the sperm/egg packets, allow them to fertilize in vitro, wait until they develop into planulae, and then give them an opportunity to settle onto...

Steinhart Aquarists head to the Philippines

Fun times so far! One other thing worth pointing out is that we are going to collect stuff that is plentiful and present in huge colonies like Acropora, Montipora, etc. So, inch sized frags from colonies the size of rooms. Fist sized colonies of things like Lobophyllia, Favia, etc. (and...

    Copperband Butterfly

Sorry Dave, I missed this the first time around. I really don't know enough about how these guys are collected and handled to even venture a guess. I just know that there is widespread consensus that specimens from different areas have different long term mortality rates. Being stuck in a...

    Activated Carbon: HHLE Smoking Gun

Hmmm, don't know if I'd word it that way, if I am understanding you correctly. I'd say it is definitely a good idea to ensure that your carbon cannot be sucked into pumps (this is how it has caused HLLE in several PA incidents) nor fluidized, no matter what length of time you run it. Lots...
