Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I totally agree about the thread. Thanks @Blaise006! I've learned a ton about things I haven't run into yet so, thanks BAR. Once again, the best first answer to the very question in this thread is BAR :)

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

Wait, maybe I read that wrong. Did you mean: o Given $500, can we build a stable reef system? We compete based on what it is growing each month and maybe how much time we spend maintaining? o Pick a few LPS or a few SPS or a few fish and then see how cheaply can we build a stable reef...

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I'd be in on that if we can keep the tank size small-ish. I also wonder how many tanks we would have to buy to get a discount ;-) and if the goal was to be 'acro-stable' or 'LPS-stable'? I mean, a tank combo + heater + rock/sand + light + starter bio + CUC might already be tight at $500. Add...

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I wasn't attacking...you've seen my reefpi setup....I spent a hundred hours maybe on that....and I enjoyed it most of that time. ;-)

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

Is it possible to save money by buying right the first time? Feels like many of us have multiple versions/vendors/etc of the same thing? Maybe we call it an upgrade or a bad first sizing. I'm just wondering how much gear is currently running VS how much is in a box in the garage, under the...

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I didn't know that about BRS....but I have to say I've bought a few things from them but mostly in return for the awesome research/video content. Their bio diversity tank seeding comparison video really cemented some concepts and a direction for me. That was probably all known before by...

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I had the idea where I wanted to maintain many small tanks so I could create 'micro-environments' unique to specific coral. Today, automation in tank operation is 'high-end-expensive' and targeted a single largish tank. So, I built my own....component cost under $75 for all of the automation...

Favorite tools for inside the tank?

I think I found it....or rather something that looks about the same....there are a few different options, but this certainly puts us on the right track. I'm going to pick this one up and see how it works. I'll report back once I've tried it. micro-mini brush attachments on Amazon

    Chalk Bass in Novato

Oh, I was looking at a sun coral for an overhang I have....but this looks better for that spot. I'll add it to my list. Probably not sexy enough for CFM....

Favorite tools for inside the tank?

2 quart plastic container with a tight lid....a soup to go container...with 2 small holes for airline tubing made in the top. Airline tubing 2 airline tubing connectors (I'm not sure these are required...) A wand and zip ties of your choosing. There is a short tube that goes to my mouth and a...

Favorite tools for inside the tank?

These are tools I use consistently. My hands rarely go into the tank... Right to left.... Julian's device for spot feeding. Tongs for.... Long handled scraper Air driven, small syphon on a wand. I used this to get baby aptasia and it was indispensable when I picked up red planaria...sucked...

recruiting new BAR members with free frags

Does Salifert make a test for 'good long term community contributor'? I've heard that API was partnering with R2R on one :) . Also whenever I use Vibrant in the community forums, even though it is supposed to make things more clear, I find if messes up the balance of bio-contributors...some...

recruiting new BAR members with free frags

Retail stores figure in some natural losses/thefts/breakages/spoilage etc. If there are a few people that come in, grab some frags, join BAR, and only participate for 6 months..I'm ok with that. Reefing is surprisingly difficult....even more so without a bunch of knowledgeable people helping...

IM Marine Fusion Pro 2 20-25g.

https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/fusion-pro-2-20-gallon-aio-aquarium-tank-only/ I think I was off, it was 20% off, but free shipping, which took off another $40, which was another 10%-ish off the original price. In any case, a great deal and it showed up in great shape. Good luck!

IM Marine Fusion Pro 2 20-25g.

I picked up the 20g Pro last summer on a 30% off sale. It's been great. I'm in Santa Cruz, but you are welcome to stop by and check it out if you are out this direction.

    Max’s 55G tank simple setup

I didn't put anything in but IORC for the first 8-10 months with softies and LPS. I was testing alk weekly and it wasn't until 8-10 months in before I stopped being able to maintain Alk with WC. I think I picked up several SPS just before that...Montis and Birdsnests which both grow quickly...

    Ryan’s 40G first reef

I picked up 3 for a 10g and they wiped out the Aptasia in 5 days....they were small Aptasia and only a half dozen though....then they moved to the 20g and cleaned that out...then the QT...etc. They are very productive. It seems to take time for them to cover distance in a tank. I hope it goes...

...and then there were three! A multi-tank journey

We've had this giant antique oak cabinet for 15 years and had planned to get rid of it.....but with a little work I've converted it to our tank stand. Normally water and wood don't mix. In this case...at some point someone had converted this to a humidor so the inside was all lined with copper...

End of the Year Tank Shots?!

I was told the Lord was a Joker...and I've seen a few different lord colors under the Joker name. But it quickly became a favorite. The scoly base is covered in a single sponge colony. They both seem to make it work so I haven't had any reason to trim/remove the sponge. I assume the sponge...
