Jess, I think what you're thinking of are the cheek spines on the maroons which can very easily get caught in a net and tear if the fish thrashes around. A better way to catch these would be to use a clear container of some sort and herd them gently and slowly into it. I almost always use that...

Hey Moses - one thing that folks might be saying is that although the surface of the silicone feels dry, it takes quite awhile (several days) for it to fully cure. Until it does cure (meaning hard all the way through) the wet stuff underneath the surface may continue to aspirate into the water...
