    Room Smells like Skimmer Cup

I have installed an Avast Skimate Locker and it helps A LOT, but I can still smell a little "off" odor. It seems like most of the smell now is coming from the overflow and not from the skimmer underneath the tank in the cabinet.

    Room Smells like Skimmer Cup

The room i keep my 125G has a smell to it. It gets worse as the skimmer cup fills up during the week. maybe its because i have seahorses and feed a lot of frozen mysids. Maybe its because of the brand of skimmer (ATB). Any tried and true solutions to this (like carbon in the skimmer cup)?

    Biopellets

I finally gave up on BioPellets after running them for a couple of years in a few different tanks. I was very reluctant to give them up. For the most part, they were an easy form of carbon dosing and my nitrates and phosphates were very low: 0.0 NO3 and 0.03 PO4. Adding them to an existing...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

I had one male and three females in the display tank and one male and one female in the back tank.

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

Thanks guys. Despite the bad news, I do have several hatchlings that seems fine despite all of the drama. You would think ft there was a water quality problem that it would kill the hatchings too?

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

Yes, I did a 50G water change on 5/20 when I first saw the issue (which did not reduce the cloudiness) and a 30G water change on 5/26 and 6/2 and I have a 75G scheduled for tomorrow (but that's going to be a day late). And I had replaced the carbon reactor GAC on 5/26 and I have been using 1.75...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

Uber bad news. I woke up this morning and 5 of the 6 cuttles were dead. The six one looks OK, but he won't eat. Tank was tinted dark with ink. Not sure what happened. The corals, the clown fish pair and the yellow headed sleeper goby (plumped into the same system) seem fine. The snails and...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

OK, here is my assessment of what happened. I can't say for sure, but this seems reasonable: 1) This all started with me feeding 6 cuttles a fair amount of large shrimp. 2) Everything was fine a couple of months, but this feeding regiment used up the biopellets more quickly than I was...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

Bad news. The dominos continue to fall. I woke up this morning and the main return pump had failed during the night. It got all gunked up from all of the dead bacteria in the water. The cuttles seem OK, but the corals were not. I had to remove a few that looked expired and smelled funky. Not...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

Quick run of the API tests: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate are all 0. The tank has still not cleared up all the way, but I am exporting a few days worth of skim in 12 hours, so it may take some time. The worse part, however, is that the corals are not happy. Maybe they were too far...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

yes, need to keep an eye on it, but i just checked the nitrates and they are 0 with the API and Salifert test kits.

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

When I first ordered my equipment for my big tank, I had order a Aqua 25W UV filter. I had never set it up. But after just one night with the UV filter, most of the cloudiness that I have been dealing with for 2 weeks is gone.

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

I noticed the skimmer was not doing as good of a job skimming, so I think maybe the "heavier" bacteria laden water needs a little more lift, so I cranked up the skimmer. Maybe that will help clear the bacteria out of the water.

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

I think there is something about this tank/reactor setup that is different. I added the same pellets from the NPX bag to two different reactors on two different tanks 12 days ago. The cuttle tank (175G water volume) got about 500ml of new pellets added to the 250ml that were already in the...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

I have googled this and did not find any posts that were super helpful. I do have the output going to the input of the skimmer, although I could probably rig something that is better than what I am doing now (I have seen people add "T" inputs to the skimmer input). One of the posts suggested...

    Cloudy Tank (and Cuttlefish Eggs)

My nitrates were getting higher from all of the shrimp feeds for the cuttles. At 40ppm, I noticed that the biopellets had been largely consumed so I added another cup full (Two Little Fishes NPX Biopellets). The next day the tank was all cloudy. WIthin a few days, the nitrates were back to 0...

    Ray's 125G Cuttle Rearing System

I have tons of eggs, but they are small, so I don't think they are viable. I was having issues with nitrates getting pretty high, but I was feed rather large shrimp to each cuttle 2x per day. I have gone to more medium sized shrimp 1x per day and the nitrates are coming down. I also added more...

    Sump Upgrade

When I don't run socks, over time my sump gets a layer of gunk at the bottom and the skimmer and return pumps get gunked up as well. Do you not have this issue?

    May 11th Steinhart Aquarium Tour

First of all, Jim, Thanks for coordinating! Secondly, my favorite part of the tour is seeing the scale of the systems for the big tank but also how these map directly to what we do on our hobby systems: Larger carbon filters that dechloronate the SF tap water used to make the...
