300 Gallon Tank Substrate Media Poll

Me too, and the sand turning to dust is an interesting idea. I do have a removable sock holder, so I could try to take the sand out one day, but after sleeping on it, I am most in this camp, with part of me thinking it is worth it to try mixed for a bit. Other thought, I could start crushed...

300 Gallon Tank Substrate Media Poll

I am curious what the club thinks about substrates. I was planning on building a baffle, and doing 3/4 of the reborn large media (like my last system) and then 1/4 of the Julien Sprung recommended 1mm-3mm sand in the last quarter. I am internally debating on if sand is too big a hassle in...

It is all slip fit for now so if I want to add "U's" for noise reasons I can, but there is a decently sealing lid on the top of the overflow which may help quiet the overflow. I am getting water delivered next week, so I will let you know.

Getting some plumbing done, one more gasket should come today so I can get rubber between the overflow and the tank. I know you don't "need" that one, but I had so much trouble with my last overflow leaking, I am likely going to silicone everything first go. In tank salt water mixing...

Flow Questions for experienced acropora keepers

Why? I haven't seen any evidence this effects growth in the real tank. Yes, theoretically phosphates inhibits skeletal growth, but I haven't seen any rates cited or papers published on this. And my theory is that the biological gains of feeding more outweigh the chemical inhibition of the...

Flow Questions for experienced acropora keepers

The best trick I found for growing sps, was to have a two year old tank. Then lots of flow and food.

Flow Questions for experienced acropora keepers

Consider measuring alk daily and watch how it drops, that will help you gauge how much water to change and when. Edit, you are already dosing, then what are you trying to dilute or replenish with the water changes. Measure that and change based on that parameter movement.

Adding some height to a few structures. Got two of them over 20" tall. Used almost a whole 8 oz bottle of super glue with accelerant, and a few rods of the epoxy.

Cheap way to get Alk, MG and CA supplement

Get the 5 gallon bucket of soda ash, and calcium chloride. Then see if you can only get the 7 lb bag of magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride because I used those so much slower. I promise it is easier and net cheaper to let someone else bake the baking soda down.

    Tds in rodi water???

The point is that if you are measuring TDS of a fluid going into a container, you had better know there was nothing in the container to begin with. I.e. do a rinse with known 0 tds water then let dry upside down to prevent dust settling etc. If they were purchased as sterile specimen...

    Tds in rodi water???

One thing to note is you can have sterile dirt, so just because something is medically sterile doesn't always mean it doesn't have salts/minerals/other dirt in it. That is why when cleaning a med device, it gets a scrub, then an ultrasonic bath, then the sterilizer.

Trident in need of frequent calibration

Yes, I know the pipes are 100x smaller than you are used to, but I know you can do it. Unscrew the feet, pop the cover off, use tweezers to take each rubber line off, then push the solenoid and squirt rodi through the appropriate tube. Will likely take you an hour where the first half is...

I am about ready to go 2 cation, 1 anion, 1 mixed. The ultimate resin setup!

    RO/DI recommendations

I recommend eventually building up to this. Dual membrane first, dual carbon blocks in a nice to have with the high chloramines, then 2 resins is all you need. Get a booster pump for sure.

Booster Pump Location in RODI Filter

Would you get better pressure at the membrane (which gives better efficiency at the membrane) if the pump is right before it, since you don't have the pressure drops of the pre-filter, and the carbon blocks? I can just hook it up and see the pressure differential, but curious why it wouldn't...

Booster Pump Location in RODI Filter

Is there any reason to not put the booster pump directly before the RO membranes? I have always seen them behind a 100 micron screen filter and in front of all the other stages. I believe the RO membranes are the only part of the system that change performance based on pressure and work better...
